That's pretty impressive to go 16s with a completely stock motor.

That would be cool if y'all do get it in the 16s. I trash talk quite a bit, but I'm rootin' fer ya!
I still have that motor laying in the shop too. It's out of an '80 Volare.

You got to remember, that was at over 3200#. In a lighter car it would have been somewhat faster.

Maybe I should just keep the Duster and put it in there.

"Sticks and Stones" gentlemen,... "Sticks and Stones"...

I think it's pretty obvious to all (even Bagel! ) following along in this saga between Cookie and me that he is nothing more than hot air and evil intentions.

Whenever he is in a quandry over what to say he resorts to name calling and twisting my words around. Very sad actually... :(

C'mon Cookie... Ya gotta do bedder 'n dis!

(Don't let your enthusiasm "wayne" just because I'm already whoopin' up on ya! Pick yerself up by the boot straps and be a big boy about it. :P )

I replaced the melted shifter cable last night. :D

While I was down there fiddlin' I noticed that I could re-route the front tranny fluid line to get it away from the header and shifter cable. When I was re-tightening the line I broke the fitting off in the transmission! :x

Luckily, my "easy-outs" were close at hand and I was back in bizness.

Does anyone have pictures of how they routed their shifter cable to avoid melting the cable?

Dennis described his method and I thought I had it far enough away from the header, but I was abviously wrong. Perhaps the metal I was using to divert it from the header actually transferred heat to the cable... :?

I've wrapped the new cable with header wrap stolen from the Challenger shifter cable, but I still need to route the cable as far from the header as possible.

Post subject:  More progress...

A fun evening at the garage tonight.

I re-routed the shifter cable over to the passenger side of the transmission and looped it under the bell housing. Thanks Romeo Furio for the advice and pictures.

Here is the melted cable and the broken fitting from the last time I fiddled with it.

Image

Here's how I made my heat shield / "cable diverter" to go under the transmission.

Image

Then I just flipped it upside down and bent it so that it hangs a bit below the transmission and points to the rear. This gives the cable a place to rest and keeps it away from the header.

Image

Like this! :D

Image

If left to its own devices, the shifter cable would dangle underneath the oil pan in front of the shield I made.

Image

But it easily pushes behind the shield and points away from the header.

Image

And on the passenger side.

Image

Then it loops up around the dipstick tube.

Image

And through the trans tunnel on the passenger side.

Image

To come up to the shifter like this.

Image

Here you can see the hole up higher and toward the middle of the fire wall where the melted cable went through and where this one goes through the trans tunnel lower down and to the passenger side.

Image

I still put some aluminum foil around it for more protection. Next time I'm over there I will put some header wrap around the header where it comes closest to the cable.

Image

I had quite a bit of foil, so I just used what I had.

Image

I did discover that I need to replace the idler arm. It seemed fine when I checked it several months ago, but I guess a couple passes down the 1/8th mile and the backwards tow to and from the track loosened it up to reveal how bad it actually is. I just sold one at the banquet too.

While I was laying under there I saw some more easy weight removal in the form of more 30+ year old grunge that I can scrape off.

I've been low 16's in the car myself with a stock longblock just like the one we have in the car now. Granted I had a better converter, but Wookie will have more gear to make up for it.

Wookie's gotta weigh a couple hundred pounds less than me too.
This same engine in GodsRods Duster I had a fastest time of high 14's.

That car was heavier by a couple hundred pounds (estimated), had a 3.91 open 8 1/4 out of a Dakota on street tires and a 2800 RPM converter.

GodsRods Duster II is lighter, has a Ford 8" with 4.62s and a mini spool and a 4500 RPM converter on ET Streets.

Both cars have leaf springs. GodsRods Duster I had a pinion snubber set at 1" from the floorboard and added leafs for a very stiff ride.

I'm pretty sure I can get this combo into the mid 13's.

Next steps to get there:

1. More "Seat Time". :D

2. More weight reduction.

3. Swap steel wheels and ET Streets for Centerlines and slicks.

4. Seal hood scoop to the carb.

5. More aerodynamic type stuff (close off grille, chin spoiler...)

6. Any other suggestions? (Shut up Cookie! :P  )

Sounds like you have too much converter and too much gear for that motor - will likely slow you down. If GR I actually ran high 14s, then you should already be in the 13s. Have you tested the actual conv stall?

X2 on what Lou said about the gear. A lighter car shouldn't need as much gear as a heavier car. I bet if you had the 3.91 or 4.10 gear in it that would be plenty.

This engine pretty much is what it is. It's the "entry level" engine to teach teenagers how to drag race.

It is a lot of converter and gear. Remember, the new engine Gary built for me was originally planned to be in here.

I went back and looked at the GodsRods Duster I thread. It was a tire spinning 15.85 that we ran at SGMP back in 2006. Frank told me he got it down into the 14's...

At any rate, I'm pretty excited that it is running this fast. :D

I only made the two passes, so I haven't settled down into it enough to really know what's going on with it yet. The 4.62's do seem to be better suited for the 1/8th mile.

I haven't tested the actual stall yet. I will do that the next time I take it out. It is a Dynamic converter. I called them and gave them all the specs for the car.

It's easy enough to swap the 8 3/4 with the 3.91 Sure Grip from the Street Duster in here I suppose... I would rather gear for the 1/4 and let it run what it runs in the 1/8.
