Ok, I put in some different jets in today and here's my thinking.

55 primary idle (not sure of the actual dia. might be .022" or so.
57 secondary idle. I still don't get the idle on a secondary prog carb.

180's on the mains. VW's use about 145 on a 1600 CC motor.

170 air restrictor's. VW's use 180's or so and these don't come in until the pedal is pushed hard. They limit air so the smaller size limits more air I think.

I took it out and it's even more peppier. I also loosened the vac advance for a quicker advance. I'll drive it to work tomorrow. Still won't burn out though. Shouldn't my setup burn some tires?

Thanks

No, not necessarily. I don't remember, but think you've got an automatic trans, right? Your bigger camshaft has pushed the power and torque curves into a higher engine speed range (less low-end torque available), which means unless you rev the engine up in Neutral and drop the trans into Drive, which is a good way to damage the transmission, you probably will not burn the tires. Why do you want to do this?

Just looking for more torque. I drove it to work today and filled it up. After all the tweaking and such I'm getting 15 MPG. Now that's mostly before I rebuilt the carb and re jetted. Not horrible but acceptable I guess.

I discovered another problem today though, I'm getting junk from the tank in my filter which is starving the engine. At about 65MPH it acts like a govenor pulsing slightly. I can see cloudy gas in the glass filter. Not sure what it is but I'll at least have to change the filter. I did have the tank out during the car rebuild process and I put in a new sock filter on the pickup tube as well as a new float. I might push a little air back into the tank when I do the filter. I'm now worring I have to pull the tank and do a cleaning. Bummer.

What spark plugs are you running?

Autolite. Don't know the exact number. I'll check tonight.

Do check that - you may be able to further improve things with a thoughtful spark plug type change.
