C'mon, please be serious. This is like saying "Hey, I just noticed a Ferrari has four round black tires, just like my Dart! Does this mean the Ferrari motor will fit the Dart?".
Well, BMW motorcycle heads fit onto BMC (think Austin Mini/Morris Minor) A-series engines without too much machining so it's not that silly an idea he's had.

The key things to look for would be bore spacing and cylinder head bolt location.

Many BMW fans regard the V12's controls about the same way that Chrysler fans regard the Lean Burn, except without the Lean Burn's simplicity and reliability.
Let me at least swallow the coffee before you post things like that... there went another perfectly gppd keywbvaoardd.*@&.... <bzzt>

True, but we go through this about 10 times a year here. Trust me, there is nothing else that will work that will be even close to an improvement over what we have to start with. And what we start with is not that good, but also not that bad. :D

Non-sequitur. Yeah, it is.

I am working on a head block combo to convert a slant from a 4-stroke to a 2-stroke. Of course it is a race only engine and would need to be destroked to hold together at the naturaly high RPMs, but just think about it, twice the power strokes.

Okay, I was gonna keep this a secret. However, with all this rambling back and forth about this topic I figure now is a good a time as any to reveal what I've found as a workable alternative head for our beloved Slant 6.

As some of you may recall, Doug Dutra sent me a used head gasket over here to Germany so that I could make some comparisons to other European inline 6 cylinder engines.

I was thinking mostly along the lines of the BMW engines in their different sizes (2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.5, etc). I had all the guys at the local auto craft shops dragging engine blocks all over the place to help me find something. Bore spacing, overhead cam issues and several other things mentioned here prevented the BMW heads from being likely candidates...

So, then I naturally started looking toward Mercedez stuff given that whole Daimler-Benz connection thing... Nah! That stuff was all way too funky!

Then, by chance one day as I was bench racing with my auto craft shop buddies about not finding anything worthwhile, one of the older retired fellers that frequents the craft shop from time to time said, "Let me have a look at that head gasket." After eyeballing it for a few minutes he asked if he could take it for a few days and get back to me. A quick glance and head nod from the guy that runs the craft shop told me I'd be okay to let him have it and I'd get it back, so figured, "What the heck. It's not like I've found anything yet."

About three weeks later I got a call from Johnny at the craft shop telling me I should swing by to pick up my head gasket. I had all but forgotten about it and had given up by this point. So, I show up a couple days later to grab the gasket and Johnny's got one of them big toothy grins all over his face and says, "Follow me." I followed along thinking he had just thrown the gasket in a supply closet or that the old retired feller had cut up the gasket to fit on something and Johnny just thought it was funny...

Back in one of the bays that only the craft shop employees use, there was the head gasket sitting prominently atop a cleaned up head of some sort on the work bench. I looked at all the critical things like head bolt arrangement, bore spacing and the like. Granted, I am no expert on this sort of thing, but it all looked pretty workable to me. So I took a bunch of digital photos and wrote down measurements. These heads are even somewhat plentiful over here in Germany, so we took one and cut it on a band saw for some cross-sectional comparisons. I sent all that stuff and even the cross section piece to Doug for his much more critical analysis of the potential of this head.

So far it looks like it might be a viable alternative with some decent increased potential over what we have now. I deliberately didn't say what exact head this is until we do a little more analysis and I can get a complete head back to Doug for trial fitting and hopefully some testing. It will still take some doing with valve train components, exhaust/intake and the like, but the components available for this set up are a couple decades newer than what we have now and there is even some pretty good aftermarket support for it over here.

I'm sorry this is a little preliminary and it isn't enough yet for you to go to your significant other and say, "Honey, I want an XYZ head for Christmas!" But with this thread going on I felt the urge to share. Doug said I could. He just said not to share too much. So, now I guess you'll all have visions of head conversions rather than sugar plums dancing through your heads this Christmas Eve...

(Think Opel. I ain't sayin',... I'm just sayin'... )

Shhhh! They'll hear you... :D These guys don't like the idea of Chevy parts on their Slant 6! It's better to just call it an Opel.

All will be revealed in good time...

Merry Christmas everyone!
