Please explain your boost controller set up, is it electronic?

And no worries bill, we all get things mixed up unintentionally from time to time including myself frequently enough.[/quote]

Thanks for being understanding. My mind is not too reliable these days... I think I've got it straight, now.

My boost controller is just an inline valve system that came from Racin' Jason (RJC) in Salt Lake City. He's a Buick Turbo guy and sells these things for very little. He clams that what they do is deprive the wastegate of the signal to open, until ALL the boost for that pre-set value is present. Without it, he says, the wastegate can start opening gradually as the boost climbs toward the pre-set opening number, depriving the turbo of that diverted amount of boost, unnecessarily. That phenomenon will delay spool time due to the reduced amount of boost the turbo is "seeing" during the spool-up time.

It's just a piece of hose with some springs and fittings in it; and is adjustable as to the amount of boost you want to occur before the wastegate actuator actually "sees" it.

See it here: http://rjcracing.com/product/boost-controller/

I hope it works as advertised.... The Buick guys I know who use it seem to like theirs...

I pulled the head off this weekend and put in my ARP studs and Cometic head gasket.

Ran a line to mount the fuel pressure gauge under the dash,
Re jetted my carb, 70 on primary 86 on secondary

Dialed the boost in to 10 psi and held a solid 14psi of fuel pressure at full boost.

AFR was a consistent 12-13 in boost and had no flat spot or lag.

I was not aware of Cometic having a head gasket for the slant six. I just looked on their site, and didn't see any. Can you supply a part number and source?

Charlie,

I don't have a part number for it, And they don't stock them, but if you call directly they will be able to make one to order for you.

It was 135$ and can be made in a few thicknesses.

12-13 AFR is lean for a boosted engine and if I understand correctly "14psi FP at 10psi boost"....your fuel pressure will only be 4psi. I think that is to low and could cause problems. If you can't change that, then look at getting the largest alcohol needle and seats.

Agreed that above 12:1 AFR will likely make less power and be dangerous RE detonation.

Cometic gasket sounds great!! Is it a MLS type, or copper, or???

Thanks,

Lou

Well take into consideration that I am also running an AEM meth kit for detonation control. There is no detonation but I'm still going to increase the jet size on the sec. to be safe. And keep an eye on my AFR and as long as I don't go lean at any point, my bowls must be getting enough fuel with 14psi

I have read that under boost, 4 psi of positive pressure is enough to keep your bowls full because the pump is still flowing a high volume, but im not sure if that's true or not and a few people on the forum now have said that it's not enough.

I also checked my plugs today and they are burning very nicely.

As for the Cometic Gasket, it's a nice thick heavy composite material. I got the thickest one, don't remember the exact spec. But I was happy to lose any compression I could.

Hey everybody, new problem.

Getting an oil leak around the rear section of the pan, here's the weird thing though, it doesn't leak just sitting, or even at idle or 1500 rpm or so ( I ran it with the car in the air so I could see it) the only time I find it leaking is if I take it out for a drive and get into boost a few times, there is plenty of oil spread about. I have basically narrowed it down to the pan being the source though. Not the rear main seal.

I'm thinking that under boost it's creating enough pressure in the crank case to make the oil seep out.

The solution I have in mind would be a crankcase evac pump.

Let me know of any other ideas suggestions on this problem.

Ps I have a catch can setup now, and I'm not getting any oil it, which kind of tells there isn't much blow by to pressureize the crankcase but maybe im missing something

I found out I need to put on a fuel pump block off plate with a vent to go to my catchcan as well as the valve cover. Should solve the problem

What kind (and number) of vents do you have on your rocker arm cover?

One 5/8 going to my catch can now. I'm going to put a mister gasket breather filter there and have the block vent go to my catch can tonight and see how that works

i tryed a double line to a filtered vented plastic bottle and had oil leaks everywhere so i hooked the breather back into the headers and it stoped

I've heard it's not safe to run an exhaust scavenge setup on turbo cars.

I just have two filtered breathers on top of the rocker arm cover, but I haven't run much boost, yet. It's been okay so far, but the boost quotient is set to go up in the near future. I'll let you know how the breathers handle the blow-by.
