I have checked yours out as well, not for this subject, but came across it researching other things... Yours also pulls from the rad support, not anywere near the ground or actual puddles of water. I suppose my mistake was using a new car as an example in a thread about fresh air intakes for our old schools, again like I said on that one the filter itself (high-flow cone) sat under the car flush with the bumper, not just an open tube connected to the rad support or inner fender well... I wish I had pics of the set-up but the car is long gone at this point.

Unfortunately the temp switch on my air cleaner does not work and the door stays open, still have the stove pipe connected in hopes it helps a litte in the cold, but probably doesnt.

Try and find a 1980 on up truck air cleaner base. That is what I am using. The stock 74 sensor croaked.

Olafla- I believe that picture is of the factory system. It has been years since I owned my old wagon, but I do recall there being a hard plastic tube over the driver's front wheel.
Thank you, Reed. My '77 don't have that part of the tube, maybe because there are aftermarket liners mounted in the front fenders, that take up the room intended for the outer tube. Originally designed to reduce splash to prevent rust, the liners somewhat make up for the pipe, by directing air towards the tube inlet in the inner fender.

Are you able to tell us how much induction noise is heard inside car with this?
I've been thinking about putting the intake into the plenum too, but was concerned about the level of noise created inside car. Don't want to cut hole and find it's a big mistake!

Another problem would be gasoline fumes entering the cabin area since they would flow directly into the fresh air vents.

I really didn't even think of that, thank you. I really havnt had much time to hit any yards lately, things are crazy with my first kid on the way :D . On a good note though I found my flex hose to go from the cleaner to the fender so that's back on. Working on switching to a Motorcraft 2100 soon, hoping it'll handle the crazy hills I live on better than the BBD does, but that's after replacing the stock 78 muffler lol.

If your having a hard time on the hills go with a little more valve lash, .012 and .022 for more torque and when you have a chance get rid of the stock exhaust pipe and go with 2.25". It makes a big difference!

I am actually running a super quiet 2.5" Flow Master exhaust system on a worn out stock motor and it has a lot more power for the hills and mountains around here. I am very happy with the extra gas pedal response and the higher vacuum readings on the steep hills and at cruise.

You can see the exhaust system pictures by clicking on the red link and go into slide show mode for captions.

I removed the fresh air vents and closed up the holes.

I figure rolling down the window and popping the vent windows open is better than a face full of leaves. Unless you drive through a forest, which is cool.

Its a factory super six so it has 2 1/4 from the manifold back, then out of the muffler it stepped down to one. When I get some extra funds Im going to have the exhaust shop finish it with 2 1/4 out the back, he just swapped out the muffler with a thrush turbo and made a HUGE difference! The valves are set to 12 and 22 already after reading several post on these forums.

There you go! Good work.....

If you feel going to a Turbo made a big difference, wait till you try a 2.5" Flow Master HP2 and a the big FM70. It is just the right balance of keeping the exhaust temps up and extraction. It also is super quiet when you stand on it!

i removed the fresh air box and covered the hole with a sandwich of sheet metal/ insulation/ sheet metal. doesn't leak when it rains. i'd also suggest adding a screen where the air box meets the cowl vent to help with those leaves if you don't want to completely remove it.
