Just got home. I’m wiped out! I have a meeting with the CG in the morning...  A very successful first outing for ToadRacer and the Off-Kilter Racing team!! I will post more with photos soon. I need some sleep. |

The weekend went better than I could have hoped for. Great friends and good times. The car ran like a sewing machine all weekend. We finished in 34th place out of 60 cars. We made 182 laps around the 3.7 mile road course (673+miles). We all got some good seat time. Hot Shoe Lou had the fastest lap at 3:12.815. The only real issues were the oil pan gasket leak we had to manage and the melted shifter cable. Both easily worked around. The right rear axle seal didn’t live up to its name, so that is kinda yucky. I’ll clean up the oil and gear lube all over once I recover a bit. The car ran great and was very well balanced with good brakes and handling. And we won Organizer’s Choice! That means we were kinda their favorites...

EVR had a number of issues. Learned a lot about what breaks when the car actually stays together long enough to race for more than an hour. Sebring is also a very fast track, so we put more heat into everything including the brakes. Bob went out for an hour or so on Saturday morning. He got flagged early for smoke, and it turned out our front trans seal was leaking; Lou helped us rig up an effective diaper for the bellhousing that kept enough of the fluid contained to keep racing. It was reportedly driving great even at 2 psi of boost, but the brakes were getting worse and worse. Eventually pulled off to bleed them, but it didn't help. Figured we were baking the master cylinder with turbo heat, so we ordered another at a local shop. Chris went out next and drove for maybe 2 laps until the brakes failed completely. Pulled back in to find the rear shoes had completely disintegrated, and the hardware on one side had fallen off. Sourced new wheel cylinders and 10x1.75 brake shoes, but couldn't get the shoes until that evening, so we were done for the day. We got it all put back together that night and built a new, larger heat shield for the master and added jerry-rigged ducts for the front calipers just in case. Anton went out Sunday morning, and the car ran great for his whole stint, albeit the brakes were still a bit squishy. He came back in, we fueled and belted in Chris again, but then the car wouldn't start. Firewall relay clicking, but no action from the starter-mounted solenoid. No amount of hammering or banging would get it to budge. We pushed it back to the garage, pulled the (super-mini) starter, and realized it got so hot the solder melted off the solenoid contacts. The starter had a heat shield, but it wasn't enough. Tried to mount a regular mini starter we borrowed from the Toadracer team, but it wouldn't fit with our wastegate routing. No luck finding a super-mini starter at any parts stores that day. Bob tried to re-solder the solenoid and got it to energize, but only for a half rev at a time. Not enough to fire, even with starting fluid. We were finally able to pull-start the car (early 904 with a rear pump) by towing it out to the back edge of the paddock and getting it up to 30 mph behind the truck. Unfortunately, it wasn't running well due to a badly cracked exhaust manifold. Chris took it on the track but had to get towed back in when it stalled. By then we were ready to throw in the towel. Our next race isn't until November at MSR. Before then we need a new exhaust manifold, new transmission, new starter, and MUCH more heat shielding on everything in the engine bay. Probably should add a hood scoop just to keep engine bay temps down, and a 4-corner disc brake upgrade. We already needed to redesign the front cooling stack to accommodate a better trans cooler and make for better cooling airflow, as fluid temps could still be a little better at race pace. Also need to make a better list of spare parts that we carry to every race, and totally reorganize our parts bins. I hated to lose 5 hours of race time waiting on a parts store truck for something that costs less than $30. Hayley and Carrie helped a lot by running back and forth to get parts (and food), which is a lot less fun and probably doesn't make for a good story. Also on the agenda for this summer is a real vacation or two to help pay them back! So it could have been better, but we learned a lot and spent the time with people we liked. Team Toadracer made great neighbors! Looking forward to next time, hopefully after we have this machine dialed in. |

Thanks for the rundown, Frank. It was SO great pitting next to you guys, working together a little, and sharing the in the madness. Hope we can meet on a track again soon! Matt, where did you get those pics?? I haven't seen those yet and would like (hopefully) hires versions... Maybe Rob sent them or posted them on some kinda facefrog or instatoad site?? Cheers, Lou |

I went to a Lemons website for the Sebring race. I paid $10 to download all the pics they had. I figured it would be nice to share. I will have to post a link to that site as soon as I find it again. |
