Old versus new options... :D My first time buying new race tires. I’ve always used other people’s old cast offs...

Congrats, you have graduated... Old tires do not work as well as new tires.

They did not balance well at all. One took 7.5 ounces!

Oh well. No time to mess with it now.

Big tires may take a lot. I just did my 275/40-17 Mickey T drag radial R's and they took about 5 oz, split up in two different places on the rims.

What is odd is that the tires they know are for racing should be the "best" I would think. But that doesn't appear to be true.

My tire guy told me when I was going through this mess, that most of the bigger street tires take less than 4 Oz. He pointed to the floor at a set of 4 new 35" rough tread tires, and he said that none of the 4 took more than 2 Oz. of weight!

Many people don't even balance slicks, especially faster cars. Wheel weights make great bullets in high gear.

Watch a slow motion vid of even an 11 second car and see what the slicks look like through the traps.

Racing stuff is often subjected to less strict standards and less competition (among consumers) to make them better. If you have to live with parts everyday at 80 MPH on your commute, or having to panic stop in traffic, then those restrictions are usually stronger than the racing environment. I expect racing parts to usually be worse than street parts. Also, they are making 100s to 1000s of M/T slicks every year instead of millions of street tires. Very strict competition for street parts performance, and mostly not much for race parts. I could go on...

7 oz out of a 25 lb tire might give you a little vibe, but most racecars are full of vibrations already and, often, who will notice on a bunch of 1/4 mile passes? You notice after you have been driving for an hour on the hwy at 80 MPH and that vibration sticks in your ear.

Good turnout here at Mo-Kan! Good test & tune night. Good weather. Steve Nitti and Denny Baierl are here with the Supercharged Duster running low 11’s. Joel Harris made it as well with his Valiant in the high 15’s.

The Duster clicked off a 14.12 followed by a 14.13 and the loose nut behind the wheel even cut some decent .07 and .02 lights.

Speaking of lights... It’s lights out for me! I’m beat. More tomorrow.

You are going to convince them to show up at Clay City, Right?
