Slanters near and far, First of all, we racers would all like to thank the following folks: - Ron and Kay Hamby for setting up and managing this new race in Elk Creek, VA - Tim Harrold and Empire Chrysler in N. Wilkesboro, NC for generously sponsoring our racing for another year. Tim has been such a great supporter, giving us $1500 in purse money every year since 2001 (2002?). We were sorry we didn't get to see Tim this year, and wish him the very best. - Rick and Patty Covalt for feeding us BBQ dinner Friday night. - Ron, Kay, Barbara Bruner, and others for feeding us chili, hotdogs, and other goodies for lunch and dinner Saturday. Friday night: 11 cars showed up, and 9 cars lined up for eliminations. Beautiful weather except for some fog later in the night. Larry Chesney appears to have had a mild heart attack at the launch of his 2nd practice run, so laid out the rest of the weekend. Warm wishes go to he and Ellen. He was feeling much better Saturday, but didn't race, obviously. Charlie Schmid made it up from FL and ran a best ever 8.02 in his Cuda but burned a piston on the next pass and the car was out for the weekend. He did come back to drive Larry's car and win a round on Sat, though! Larry was very generous to lend out his great car. Other racers: Rick Covalt, Ryan Covalt, Micah Covalt, Whitney Covalt (driving Lou's Slantkota), Meril Bruner, Gary Bruner, Ron Hamby, Greg Ondayko, and Lou Madsen. It came down to Ron Hamby and Gary Bruner in the final, and a light fog delayed the final round until Saturday. Ron Hamby took the win, running right on his dial. Saturday: Larry Chesney let Charlie Schmid drive his '64 Dart racecar on Sat, and Charlie put up a round win after only 2 passes in the car! So, 10 racers competing on Saturday. Rick Covalt put me out in the semis when I 0.01 redlit, and set up an all-Covalt final round - youngest son Micah (age 19), who had been cutting great lights all weekend, against Dad Rick. Micah got all excited on the line and spun the tires for the first time all weekend, giving Dad the win. Rick (62 pts) and Micah (64 pts) are in a close race for rookie of the year. A rather weird track - uphill, slightly short, 2300 ft elev - in an absolutely gorgeous mountain setting. Camping was sublime on Fri night. Personnel there treated us very well. I think we'll be back! More to come... Lou |

| Post subject: | race ladder and results |
Here are the ladders with results for both days. Friday's race: 1st round, in order of random ladder draw: Lou Madsen (redlight) Rick Covalt - win Meril Bruner - win Whtiney Covalt Ron Hamby - win Ryan Covalt Micah Covalt Gary Bruner - win Greg Ondayko - bye 2nd round: Rick Covalt - bye Meril Bruner Ron Hamby - win Gary Bruner - win Greg Ondayko 3rd round: Rick Covalt Gary Bruner - win Ron Hamby - bye Final: (run at 3 PM Saturday due to fog delay Fri night) Ron Hamby - win Gary Bruner Saturday's race: 1st round: Charlie Schmid - win Ron Hamby Gary Bruner Micah Covalt - win Ryan Covalt Meril Bruner - win Whitney Covalt Lou Madsen - win Rick Covalt - win Greg Ondayko 2nd round: Charlie Schmid Micah Covalt - win Meril Bruner Lou Madsen - win Rick Covalt - bye 3rd round: Micah Covalt - bye Lou Madsen (0.01 redlight, again...) Rick Covalt - win Final (Dad vs. son and first All-Covalt final round. The trash talking was thick... 12.10 dail for Rick and 12.12 for Micah, so a heads-up race too!) Micah Covalt Rick Covalt - WIN Pretty exciting stuff, especially with the Covalt family in full force and winning and runnering up on Saturday! Whitney had a great time doing her first ever drag racing, and put up quite a few sub 0.100 sec lights and consistent driving on Saturday. Look for her at future races! For the weekend, we had lots of points picked up, notably... Rick Covalt +62 Ron H +42 Micah Covalt +32 Gary Bruner +32 Meril Bruner +22 (2010 National Points Champion) Lou Madsen +22 This should put Hamby in the #2 spot nationally, and continues Ron's winning streak at "home" (now Elk Creek). Charlie Schmid decided before Sunday's race to NOT count points, even though he was racing, so he can come to (and count) more races later in the year - great! Cheers, Lou |

Thanks for the info Lou. I really wanted to make this event. With vacations I was unable to find someone to switch on-call weeks with me |

Great to hear from you, Brian. Great times, indeed. Hope to see you at another race this year! I would shoot for Clay City, if October works for you - closer to you, great/fast track, and fast times in cool weather. Best to you and your family, Lou |

| Post subject: | Great time |
We left the track at about 8:00PM and got home at about 2:30AM. Yes I am tired. We had a great time and it is a lot of fun to win! When it came down to Micah and I, I thought he had me covered because my lights had been fair at best. And Micah had been cutting .030- .070 lights pretty consistently. But the only one that mattered was that final one. I went in a little farther on the light and left earlier. I figure I had to win it at the light. And I cut a .010, and Micah spun really bad for the first time all weekend. I coasted to an easy win. Thanks to Ron and Kay for all the work and to the Dealer that put up the purse, and to Lou & Christine for all the food and the stop over at his house on the way down. It was a nice break on a 100 degree day! Let anyone out there doubting whether or not your vehicle is fast enough take note. The two slowest vehicles, trucks nonetheless, took the win and the R/U. Thanks to all, Rick |

Lou and all, As we tallked at the track yesterday, I could not remember if I had run 2 races last year or not. I went back and checked my records and I did indeed run 2 races at Mason-Dixon. I went out so fast in each one that I don't think I even remember the race! Thanks, Rick |

We had a great time this weekend. The 1 finger in the picture above was to show the round we both lost in. It is a lot more fun to win rounds, but we both still had a great time. Whitney really liked driving lou's slantkota and she got to learn how to bracket race. She is excited to race again which means I'm gonna have to start working on her '74 duster sometime soon to get that ready for her to race. I was just glad my Dart was able to run the 500+ mile trip without breaking anything. I was hoping to spray a bunch of nitrous, but it was probably best I it didn't work. I'll try the nitrous a little closer to home. Thanks to everyone who made the race possible it was a fantastic weekend. Everyone did so much to make it a great time and it was a great race weekend. It was nice to finally meet the Bruners, and see the traveling trophy too. It really was a neat little track with awesome scenery hopefully we can do it again next year. |
