I am going to asume then that if I go with the HEI I can eliminate every other wire all the way back to the junction block on the firewall that has anything to do with ignition or lean burn or any of that stuff? If so than this is starting to sound pretty good! |

I know it sounds trivial but I would like to mount the HEI somewhere it cannot be seen, relay as well, is there an issue with mounting it far away from dist, ignition source ect. I am trying to clean up under the hood and minimize anything bolted or screwed down to inner aprons, maybe I can hide these items somewhere on backside of core support? I just do not want to have to look at non-stock items under my hood if that makes sense. |

You still need the standard electronic ignition distributor. All the information regarding what parts to buy and where to get the parts should still be good. There are places you can buy NOS distributors linked in that HEI article. Ideally you would get a distributor from a truck or van since the timing advance curve will be close to what you want, but really all you "need" is a vacuum advance can and a single pickup in the distributor.
Ok so according to the HEI write-up I still need a standard electronic ignition...is that correct? They mention a place you can buy them new ( which I prefer ) but original post was made in 2006 I think. Are they still avail new Assuming they are not and scavenging junkyard what will I look for in a good usable ( for many years ) dist. I am assuming no shaft side to side wear but what other indicators would you suggest I look into? |

If it is going to bug you seeing the HEI module or relay bolted to your fender, you could try mounting them inside a waterproof box on the tire side of the fender and running the wires to the distributor and coil. |

Im gonna go back and review again the HEI articles so less questions and then come back to your simplified drawing. Thanks |

Read the two different sections preferably the first one on recurve pages under Engine FAQ. That will explain everything in those 4 pages. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38471 |

In trying to make a decision what ignition I will use I will need an idea of what will need to be done with my 84 wiring harness to make a standard electronic ignition work with it, maybe there is a thread here where this discussion has taken place? If someone could direct me to that thread it would be most helpful. I am sure Reed is tired of typing I like the idea and seeming simplicity of the HEI, I do not like the idea of non-stock components under my hood, I have worked hard to try and get everything as it was in 1986 ( or as close as possible for what I know ) Still have not decided yet which way to go but cant make a good decision until I know most of the facts. Thanks for the help |

Where are you located? Maybe there is someone close who can help you go over the rewire. For those of us that are more knowledgeable in wiring this kind of thing is easy peasy. You can hide an HEI module inside a stock Mopar ignition module for a more Mopar look, but what ever you do it will not look like an original 84 or 86 truck. And trust us, that is a good thing! It will look more like an early 70's truck instead.

These components are stock for another manufacture, hence reliable and readily available.Or is your concern over using non Mopar parts and polluting the gene pool. Would your vehicle be a bone stock factory original show machine, or something less pedigreed? If the latter than a little ignition modification for enhanced drivability and durability wouldn’t change the recipe much. |

Switching to HEI involves doing nothing to the 1984 wiring harness. You will have to build your own wiring harness from scratch using wires and terminals. However, since you need only four new wires, building a wiring harness for a new HEI ignition system is easy. Like I said above, you need a wire from the HEI module to the (+) coil terminal, a wire from the HEI module to the coil (-) terminal, and the two wires that go from the HEI module to the distributor. That's it. You don't do anything to the rest of the wiring in your truck. The only place the HEI ignition wiring harness would touch any of the existing wiring harness in your truck would be at the coil (+) terminal. Honestly, if this is causing you this much trepidation and grief you may be better off finding someone who is more comfortable doing vehicle wiring to fabricate something for you. |

Since both the 1984 and 1986 wiring harnesses were from trucks equipped with computer controlled ignition and not standard electronic ignition, converting either harness to work with standard Mopar electronic ignition is more involved. Have to add the ignition control module as well as a ballast resistor and get a different coil. You also have to splice into the main switched ignition circuit. Here is an article discussing how to convert from lean burn to standard Mopar electronic ignition. Ignore the reference to the "blue main ignition wire" since the wire on your truck is a different color. You will need to use a wiring diagram to trace which wire you need to splice into. |

Polluting the Gene pool, yes that is it. Thanks for clarification
