Romeo, I re-typed my post above. I'm not sure it can be the galley plug. Take a look if you don't mind.

Well. The drama is over and the mystery is solved. I pulled the motor back out because there just ain't enough room to get the pump out with the motor in the car. I unbolted the oil pump and the gear on the oil pump is loose as a goose. Spins on the shaft just like a bearing! This was a new pump with one of Doc's hardened gears without the key way. I'm at least glad to know that I didn't leave the front plug out. I'm guessing it held just until the gear began to heat up and then began to slip.

I'll be adding that to the list of what to look for - never would have guessed!
Glad you found it, and hope for smooth sailing from here on.

You know, you're getting so good at pulling engines, soon enough you'll be doing oil changes on the stand!

Rick, can you get measurements of the shaft OD and the gear bore ID,
should be an interfierence fit at room temperature.

I can check the shaft, but I have no way to check the inside bore. I am sending this one back to Doc and I'm sure he will check it out.

Pulled this from start to finish in 1 3/4 hrs by myself. That includes the 2 breaks I took to type a note on here and talking to Ron Hamby on the phone. If I did not have a bad back I could have had it out on the floor in 1 hr.

I checked the pump shaft size on 2 pumps. Both were .485

wonder if you will find that the gear has a through crack at the root of one of the teeth. The crack may be tight and closed when the gear is in its free state, but when it is pressed onto the shaft, allows the ID to expand and the gear hub to act as a c-clip.

Special thanks to Doc! He sent me another pump 2 day mail and it arrived this afternoon. I really appreciate the great folks we have around here!

At 4:30 I went to the garage. At 5:45 I came back in. The engine is bolted in, the convertor is tightened up and the starter and some other goodies are already in place. A couple hours in the morning and we should be ready to fire this jewel up again.

pull coil wire and gas feed to carb.. crank until you see oil press on gauge or light goes out.

fill filter and pump passages with as much oil as possible before cranking/ firing and you should be good to go!

Just about 2 hours and 15 minutes to put all the "stuff" on the engine and fill with fluid. Not to bad working by yourself. Crank, crank, crank. Houston we have a problem! Not oil pressure because I have 45 pounds just cranking, trying to start. Now what did I do wrong!! Oh yeah. It helps if you plug in the distributor plug!

Houston, We have ignition!! Woo Hoo!  Engine sounds good. Open headers are pretty loud in my garage. So I will install my mufflers and back it outside and let her warm up. It has 58# oil pressure cold. I'll have to check it once it is all warmed up.

Headed back to the garage, just a little bit happier than last Saturday!

Special thanks again to Doc for getting me another pump so fast! Hope to go Drag racing next Saturday and do some tuning. Got to put my 3.91's back in first.
