I have a '62 car and 904, but I'm building a hypo 1974 slant 225 to swap engines. Will a '62 crank going into a '74 cause any mix-match or require any spacer ring other modifications? The 904 is running behind the '62 slant now. Thanks.

That combo will work fine. The important thing is the transmission. It must match the crank. '68 and earlier trannies must go with a '68 and earlier crank. Read the post about cast versus forged cranks for the only other relevant info (but not to you, or your project).

Don't the cranks differ on auto and manuals?

60-67 "small hub" cranks will fit all 60-67 904 automatics. Some of these cranks are not drilled / finished reamed for a manual tran. pilot bushing but if you are using the 904, don't worry about this.

You will need the correct flexplate for the crank you are using.
You CAN NOT put a 60-67 "small hub" crankshaft engine with a 68 and up "big hub" 904 transmission. If you use the 62 engine and transmission together as a set, you will be OK.

All 60-75 forged SL6 cranks will interchange with all forged crank blocks. Cast cranks engine parts (1976 and up) will not interchange.

Thanks for the replies. I found a rebuilt '62 crank for the engine at Autozone, but it is .010 undersize, and includes the correct sized bearings to go with it. Two questions: (1) will the undersized journals, even with correct bearings to go with it, lead to premature failure; (2) Do I need to nix the Autozone bearings in favor of better quality bearings (I think, yes)? Thanks everyone!

What manufacturer does Autozone use to make their bearings? I've heard through the grapevine that clevites are the best.
