Post subject:  Adding A/C to a '60 Valiant?

Ok, I'm not sure I'm going to do this but I thought there might be some sages out there who'd give me advice on this.

I've got a '60 wagon that I'm slowly fixing. As most early Valiant afficianados are probably aware, A/C was not offered as an option until 1961. Some of the 60's came with a drivers' side mounted alternator. In '61 it was moved to the other side to make room in the engine compartment for an A/C compressor. The size of the compartment enlarged slightly to accomodate this.

I'd like advice from anyone who's tried to add A/C to their '60. Like I said, I'm not sure I'm going to do it. I'm not even sure I'd be able to do it because of the alternator setup. There doesn't seem to be any room to do it, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has tried and succeeded without modifying the original setup too much.

Thanks for any help you can give.

All 1960 Valiants had the left-side alternator (or generator, in Canada). Go to http://www.ackits.com and contact the company belonging to that site. Call them up. Arizona Mobile Air, I believe they're called. Have them fax you the specs on the compressor bracket they have for the Chrysler 225 slant-6. If I recall this bracket correctly, it mounts the compressor high enough on the left that it would probably clear your LH side alternator...that is IF you do not have power steering. If you have P/S, forget it. I'd also run a late model small Nippondenso alternator, which would give a great deal of additional clearance.

Thanks for the tip. I assume when you said "LH mounted alternator" you meant mounted on the drivers side of the engine. That's what I have. The car has the original engine - and the only one available that year; the 170 c.i. slant six, not the 225.

Fortunately for me, but perhaps unfortunately for the A/C idea, I do have power steering. My alternator is mounted high enough on the drivers side of the engine that I don't know how one would be able to mount anything that was any higher than that without it bumping the underside of the hood.

the idea may be futile, but thanks for the suggestion of the company. I'll sure look them up.

Yep, that's what I meant with "LH mounted alternator".

I'm aware you have the 170, but the aftermarket bracket is listed under 225.

Oof, the bracketry on the LH side of the engine is very complex with P/S on a '60. You've got a one-year-only water outlet neck with an integral alternator mount, and the P/S pump is mounted low on the LH side where the alternator would be without P/S. You *won't* fit an A/C compressor on this engine in this configuration. Suggest you go ahead and move the alternator to the RH side. This may or may not entail using an inner fender panel from a '61-'62; improve your odds that it won't by using the late model small alternator.
