Hey cool, it is the same year as mine. Glad you lost that goofy camper shell. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

Hey Jeb, Is something wrong with the /6? I've thought about doing that , but my slant would have to die first. Then depeds on whats around. My Dad is giving me his 78 aspen for parts. I think I'll take off the super six set-up and the elctronics to convert my truck.

The slant runs fine but is so weak I don't even consider it a pickup. Brand new off the showroom floor it would lose 10 MPH going up a hill and would only run 75 MPH on the floor. It was so weak it would not even pull my boat out of the water! After several near-death experiences trying to pass people, I decided to throw in a small V-8. It also gets pretty crappy gas mileage, @ 13 MPG. Found a 318 complete with 340 heads and 340 cam in a guy's yard. He gave it to me because he wanted it out of the way. It may sound mean, but with the slant, this truck is no fun to drive. If I were to wait on the slant to die, it would be 10 more years before I could put a V-8 in this truck. I think pickups should come standard with V-8s (except for the Ford 300, which will outpull a 305).

I would have to agree on that! My /6 doesn't get any better mileage than the 318/ 727 I had in my 77 Dodge long bed! Sometimes I wish I still had that combo. Let me know how your swap goes. You might also compile somethings on paper, so some of us with trucks might be able to do the swap.

I wonder what kind of gas mileage it will get with the 318/340 heads/340 cam? It will probably be bad but hey, blowing a chevy off the road, priceless! :D

I have already compiled a list of some of the parts I will be needing:

V-8 radiator
truck oil pan
air conditioning brackets
Small block 727 trans
posi for rear
kickdown linkage for 318 4-V
throttle cable linkage for 318 4-V
Heavy duty springs for front end
sway bar (needs one bad)
trans crossmember for V-8
engine mounts (duh!)
power steering pump brackets
will slant power steering pump work on V-8?

If anybody else knows of anything I will be needing, fell free to add to the list. I am sure I left a couple of things out.

Sounds good so far! Have you already swaped the lean burn out?

No, for now I am just collecting parts. I already have the 318 torn down and everything looks good. Couple of bent pushrods was the only thing I found wrong with it. I hope to start the swap sometime next year. Out of $$$. For now I will just put some more miles on the bone stock slant. It still has the lean burn (hate it) and smog equipment. The only thing that has been modified on this truck was the removal of the catalytic convertor.

You wont need a different trans crossmember to put a V8 in your truck. All 2wd truck crossmembers are the same at least til they put the 500/518
auto ODs in, real late 80s. Actually the rubber part of the motor mounts are the same between the 6 and the 8 as well. Just need the metal brackets that bolt to the engine. On the springs, according to the Moog book, the 1/2 and 3/4 ton take the same ones, 6 or 8. DON"T go with their heavy duty ones in the front of a 1/2 ton, esp. if it is a short bed, unless you wanna be looking straight into the trees while driving because it will raise the front end Waaaaaay too much. Go with the standard Cargo Coils (variable rate) over the plain old standard constant rate ones.
Ask me how I know all of this :P
