Today I tore down the engine that I plan to rebuild over the winter. Anybody have an idea when this block was made:

casting #: 530-11
stamping: 225 713 2E

The crank has number 4095246-5 which seems to indicate sometime after '76. The engine came from an '80 Mirada and appears to have had a quicky rebuild done at one time. The bearings looked new, but didn't have any "cush" to them anymore. The #4 mains came right out of the block when I removed the crank. No scores on the crank. Slight ridges in the cylinders, enough of one, so the piston wouldn't slide out. Combustion chambers looked fine. Solid lifter cam. Late model "peanut" plug head. Piston rings looked fine, even thou the compression rings had the gaps very close to each other. "Silent running" timing chain had no droop and was nice and tight. Very little sludge inside in the engine, but it did have some metal in the oil pump pickup.

Just how do you remove the oil pump pickup?

Grab it and twist. It is threaded in.

When searching for 222 713 2E I found that reference. I'd suspect that the crank and engine block were made around the same time?

The OEM one in my '76 block was seized and I had to use a pair of pump pliers to get some extra grip on it to get it to move...make sure to put the pliers down low near the block or you may kink something badly...

The 530-11 is the only number on the side of the block. The '78 block that is currently in the car has 530-14.

The channel locks didn't work. Time to get a bigger wrench. Would that be a BFW instead of a BFH.

A pipe wrench works good, give that a try.
As for the block's casting number, 530 is a common cast crank block number, the -XX is the casting equipment number. (pattern number)
