Is there anyone using this tranny? I have a 3spd floor shift in my 74 duster parts car that I am planning to put in my 64 dart, behind a 318. Everyone talks about the a-833 4 spd, but you never hear anything about the a-230.

Is it a strong/weak tranny?

Good gear ratios? anyone have opinions?

They are good trannies (and one of the most desired 3 speeds).

Basically they are similar to the A-833 OD box in regard to gear ratios (wide ratio box...3.09 1st, 1.77 2nd, and direct 3rd), so depending on your rear gear ratio you'll have a quick shift out of 1st, then a long wind up in 2nd...

I swapped a few rears into my duster and this box worked fairly well with even a 2.76 rear (much better than the automatic would...).

The A-833 'direct' box is desired because of the close ratios between the gears, but they are $$$.

Go for it!

Thanks D.Idiot, good info.
Would you happen to know the length of this tranny? Just curious, so if I ever happen across a 833, will it be a direct swap, or are there a different number of splines or...?

The length of the tranny is the same, unless you grab one out of a B/E body or truck....

Now the only difference is the driveshaft yoke...

Normally the A-833 gets the 'big yoke like the A-727, and the A-903/A904/A-230 get the smaller yoke...BUT... there have been some 'interesting' changes during the run for these trannies, and some
members have gotten A-230's with the large yoke splined mainshaft....

Just make sure to get the yoke with the tranny just to be safe...

Also if you need to rebuild the A-230 make sure to note what year it came out of, there are some rear seal differences in the early 70's vs. late 70's ones...
