Post subject:  Viper Rear Brakes on 8.75?

I've got a 1971 8.75 A-body rear end that has already been converted to the 4.5 inch bolt pattern.

Will the Viper rear disc brakes bolt up to this rear end? If not, does someone make an adaptor? How do the Viper brakes deal with the emergency cable?

TIA

Viper rear brakes won't bolt on since the Viper uses a 6x4.50 bolt pattern. But you could build an adapter to hang the Viper rear caliper onto rear disc.

Who makes an adaptor to bolt on the Viper calipers?

Nobody that I know of makes an adapter for Viper to 8.75 but it could be accomplished. There is an adapter available from my company for bolting the Viper calipers onto the front disc brakes on a Mopar.

Early Vipers used a sliding rear caliper with intregal parking brake and that setup would work pretty well on a 8.75 since the sliding caliper would work with the lash adjustment used in the tapered roller bearing rearend.

A bracket would need to be developed and an appropriate rotor found. It isn't an easy job but a good street rod fabricator could probably sort it out if you gave him enough time and money.

What are you using for front brakes?

Here are the Ford Explorer rear discs hung on a Dana 60. They'll go on a 8.75 just as easily.

For the front brakes, I'll use your kit that allows the use of the latest Viper rotor with the 13" Baer Rotors.

I understand that kit will be available in about a month.

As for the rear brakes, since I intend a Viper solution on the front, I'm intrigued by a Viper solution for the rear.

Why did you develop the Explorer kit, rather than the all-Viper solution?

By the way, Baer has an "Eradispeed" rear brake kit with an integral parking brake for the 8.75 rear end. It uses a 12" rotor with a separate hub.

I learned from Baer that I could purchase that rear hub and bolt on a 13" rotor.

All I'd need, then, is the bracket to mount the two Viper calipers per side. (One caliper is for the parking brake.)

Would you be interested in making that bracket?
