Okay, the Super Six setup I have on the Valiant is off of a 77-ish Chrysler LeBaron, 225 auto.

On my little 170, it is running horribly rich (black smoke). Where do I get BBD jets? I heard that certain BBDs interchange with Edelbrock jets, but I'm not sure.

Anyone know the stock jet sizes for a late 70s BBD on a slant?

Thanks guys, I'm just dumping gas down the tailpipe!!

Nick,

It amazes me how many people write on this board that their BBD Super Six from a Volaré now on their Valiant is running too rich or too lean. Chrysler did not build and sell them that way.

There are some critical metering rod adjustments on these carburetors that it seems most people do not know about nor understand. And now 25 years since they were new, numerous hands have tampered with these carburetors and messed them up, mabye even swapped parts from something else.

Is this black smoke at curb idle speed? If yes, then changing jets will not cure that.

I had to vent this from me, I'm sure someone else will reply with some steps you can do. Good Luck. :D

Like Craig asked, is the smoke at idle or what?

What is the current idle adjustment? (A.K.A how many turns out are the idle screws.) Are they both about the same? I think from seated, they should be 2 1/2 turns out as a start for tuning.

With a nasty vacuum leak, I was around 3 1/4 out, but now it's rich at that setting.

We'll get on to metering rod adjustments once your idle mix is good.

Don't take Craig's comments personal.

You'll be running right in no time.

It is not blowing black smoke at idle, but when you rev it up and when you drive it under a load, it blows black smoke.

Nick

P.S. The idle screws are about 3 turns out, as that is where it runs smoothest.

One of the problems with the metering rod settings, is there is no measurements in the rebuild kits. The second problem is that most of the carbs have gone thru a remanufactor, who doesn't have a clue how to set one of these up.

The early '70s 318 BBD on my \6 was purchased from a junkyard in "remanufactured" condition. It was so new, it still shined with a bright white tag. But each and every setting was off, which might be the reason it was in the junkyard. I had to install a kit to make it run right. Then I had to adjust the accelerator pump and the metering rods to make it right for my car. The rods are currently at 25/64s and the pump is 1/2".

There are rumors that the later BBDs can use AFB jets. With the early, non-smog carbs, you can only adjust the metering rods to tune your mixture.

Well of course the settings were all off it was on a V8 not a /6. I do agree that remanufacturers of most car pars must employ drunken chimps.
Have you looked at the plugs yet?
have you lowered the metering rods yet? I run mine all the way up but as you can see from my sig it isn't a stock 170.
have you checked to make sure the choke is fully open once the engine is warm?

Metering rod adjustment is easy. Check Fig. 2

Bingo! Joug_Fin nailed it. Metering rod setting is an often overlooked or improperly done adjustment on the BBD. Add to that the fact that the accelerator pump has both an adjustable mechanical linkageon the outsoide of the carb and a adjustment similar to the metering rod adjustment and it leads to BBDs often out of whack. The late 70s smog carb jets are probably just about the right size for a 170, but you need to adjust the metering rods ASAP. While you are at it, go ahead and double check everything else.
