Will a 1987 v8 4 speed od trans/bellhousing fit behind my 72 slant 6 motor? Its not the top loader trans with the cast iron bellhousing.
My motor had an auto trans but I believe I can get a bushing for the crank hole. Any help is appreciated.

No......the bell housing bolt pattern for a V-8 is much different than the slant.

AH-HA!! More detailed info! You might be able to use the slant bell. Somewhere in the early 70's, Mopar started putting a dual bolt pattern one there for two different transmissions. If yours has two patterns, you're good to go, if not, you might be S-O-L. There's also a different dimension for the center register hole, as, (I think), there's a difference in the front bearing retainer size between the old three speeds and the O/D four-gears.

I suggest you try bolting it together on the garage floor and take it from there.

Roger

The retainer and the hole changed in the 1975 year to 5.125" for the OD tranny. The pre-75's have a retainer and hole of 4.8"...you can see if your bell has the second set of holes for a 4 speed (if so you're in luck), then your next problem will be to locate a machine shop to turn down the retainer or enlarge the retainer hole in your bellhousing... It might just be cheaper to see if someone has the correct bellhousing from a 1975-1976 A-body, or 1976-1980 F-body for a couple bux...

There is a good photo of the dual bolt pattern bellhousing in this article:
