| Post subject: | Best oil for A-833 |
I recently installed a 833 in my 65 dart, which was an experience. The shop I bought the tranny from told me that virtually any oil will work well and through his experience thought that 20w50 engine oil was a good place to start. I know the factory specifed as high as 130 gear oil. Any thoughts. thanks |

The manual specifies ATF... you can use this for quicker shifts, if your gaskets leak you'll bleed the box out in a hurry going down the road. I use 90Wt "GL-4" in my A-833OD (DO NOT USE GL-5!!!! it's for sure grip rear ends and causes the synchros to skip...). Some have actually specified in colder areas you can use non-detergented 30Wt. Your choice, each works perfectly fine. -D.Idiot |

not sure what you mean by "best". Absolute best would probably be a synthetic such as RedLine MTL. That is what I use in my Doug Nash 5 speed box. If you didn't really mean "best" then Rob's recommendations above are good. when in doubt, read the service manual. |

Right now I'm around el paso texas, quite a temperature range, hot during the day but winter/night it does freeze. I do spend a little time in Washignton to though. |

i have successfully run 1 qt of atf and top the rest off with 80w90 (usually about 2 qts) it seems to work very well for me. i tried 80w90 for the full fill and it was good awful to shift. i think straight atf would cause other problems, but i am unsure as i never tried it (even though thats what the factory says to use) |

thanks for the input all, I will work on changing that in the upcoming future. And just for the record, depending on the year, the manual specifies 130 wt. Other years though it does specify a lower weight oil. |
