Hi Bob,
How loud is your car with no muffler? Is is louder than a stock slant with a turbo muffler. I really did not care for that sound. It set up an annoying racket at highway speeds. Several people have remarked at how quiet my turbo car is with stock mufflers (I kept the duals). Do you think it would be safe to just replace each muffler with a straight piece of pipe? Is my wife going to hate riding in my car if I do? Do you have a crystal ball you can look into? :lol: I would certainly like to get rid of the back pressure, and would not mind a little angrier sound coming from the exhaust.

It is definitely louder than a stock slant with the turbo muffler that I had, but it has a very different tone and pulse. I love the sound and my wife has never complained. Personally, I think she likes it but would never admit it :wink:. She does always want me to take the Barracuda when we go out in the summer.
Many people have remarked that they like the sound. At highway speeds I don't even notice it, but this is a convertible and a bit noisy anyway. I actually turn the radio off when I'm not on the highway just so I can listen to the exhaust! :twisted:
Remember that I do have a dual Pace Setter Monza resonator on the end( http://hometown.aol.com/bbobbias/page2.html ). Adding it made the sound less harsh. Since you have dual exhausts the single Monza resonator on each may work for you, but I think it would look real cool with the dual resonators on each pipe. Let us know if you do this and what you (and your wife) think.

No turbo in my 72 Scamp, but I am ready for a new exhaust. Since we are nieghbors, I wondered if you had a recommendation on a shop that would actually take alittle bit of care when doing the job? I've gone to Lou's Custom exhaust in Waltham but he is super expensive (like $375 for single with flowmaster!).

OR maybe you did it yourself?

I first used a corrugated bendable pipe for the exhaust pipe but was not happy with it. So I brought it to a muffler shop and had them duplicate it. They charged me $45 for the exhaust pipe. I also had them bend a 2 1/4" tail pipe and a muffler substitution pipe. They were $35 and $15. As I recall I only had to tell them what car it was for for the tail pipe, but I think I brought them the old muffler. I did everything else myself.
I had the pipes bent at Kelly's Tire Mart in Middleboro. That is quite a distance from you but it was handy for me at the time.
If you do go the bendable pipe route use short sections (4 ft. I think) instead of one long piece. It is easier, but still not easy.
