Post subject: Smog pump blew plugs
PostPosted: Mon Oct 04, 2004 4:24 pm
The smog pump on my 86 slat has this plastic thingy on the back that the hoses go into. Around the diameter of this "plastic thingy" there are four holes that were originally plugged that aren't now. The exhaust pumping out of these 4 tiny holes, and the noise is rediculous. I would pull the whole pump, but here a visual inspection is given at inspection.

They sell remanned smog pumps at autoparts stores.

Hmm, maybe you have excess backpressure somewhere, clogged cat/muffler?

I guess it is possible, but the cat has only been on there for about 6 months. Do you think the round plastic thingy would be part of a new pump?

I'm not real sure about how it all works, but I believe there is a check valve that should restrict pressure from forcing exhaust back thought the pump, even if the pump isn't working.

Follow the metal line from the back of the head till you find it. If you disconnect the pump from the valve, no exhaust should leak.

I'm almost tempted to revoke this comment entirely, because I'm really not sure if this is correct, but perhaps it's something to look at.

If you are looking for a part listing ask for a "diverter valve". That sounds like what you are describing.

Slant6ram has the right idea.... What you're describing is almost always caused by a bad check valve. when you go get the new diverter valve (which you apparently need) get the check valve too. It's fairly inexpensive (compared to the diverter and air pump).

Not to scare you, but.... The check valve went bad in my father-in-laws car. It melted everything plastic connected to or near that air pump and line. In fact, it looked like there had been an engine fire under his hood -- except he claims he never smelt any smoke.
