This is embarrassing but, I drove the Dart over the weekend about 30 miles at 55 MPH (roughly) when all of the sudden there was a angry growling noise and the rear tires locked up completely. I hopped out and looked at the differential and noticed a whiff of smoke coming out from it. After getting towed home (on a flat bed, car does not roll), I took off the rear cover only to find no gear oil in the diff.!!! ACK. So, I cleaned out the black residue, smeared on some gasket sealer, put the cover back on and let it sit over night. Today, I filled up the diff. with gear oil, and after rocking the car back and forth a little in neutral, I managed to get things moving again and even drove it a little around the driveway. I know what happened can't have been good for the car, but am I even more foolish to believe that I have "saved" this rear end? What other kinds of unseen damage may have been caused from this situation and what should I look and listen for when I can get it back out on the road? |

Sorry to say that there is a high likelyhood that the rear end will now make noise from heat scored bearings and gear teeth. DD |

At least you can roll the car around till you find a replacement rear. |

Thanks - I figured it was probably shot, but I'll get it out on the roads around my house and see how bad the noise is. Some I can live with. At least I'm learning a lot about the rear differential now! The car is new-ish to me and I was a little surprised to see the 8.25, now I get to find out how plentiful (or not) they are up here in Maine... |

If you didn't smoke the outer driveshaft bearings to the axle, you could quite possibly still re-use the main housing and the axles. This would require new bearings, replacement ring and pinion and replacement seals all around. While this will be more expensive than finding a complete junkyard rear, you can build what you want (gear ratio) and you'll know what you've got when you're done. Good as new, or mileage unknown with 20+ years of use/ abuse. Depending on the cars condition I could go either way, but if you plan on keeping it around it's a no brainer. |

Had the exact same thing happen to my truck on the highway nearly 8 years ago. Axle bearings won't last 100 feet without gear lube at highway speeds. The axle itself and axle shafts were OK when it happened to mine. New bearings, seals, and ring & pinion later (and a sure-grip -S/6 |

I'm feeling the re-build vibe too. The car was driven out from Oregon two years ago and is in great shape considering the kind of cars I usually see around here. Plus, I bought it less than a year ago and want to make it work, so I'll still check around for a replacement rear, but I'm also going to start pricing new parts. Winter is on the doorstep, so it will be a good project for the next few months... |
