Can someone outline the procedure to get the axles out of a 67' 7 1/4 suregrip rear diff. Thanks. |

I'll be short because I can't promise it's the same as a later 7 1/4, but here is how it works (72 and up is all i've ever looked at) Block the front wheels so car can be safely raised in neutral. Take off the wheel and brake drum. Remove 4 (or 5) nuts which retain axle bearing against brake backing plate. There should be a hole in the axle flange that permits access to the nuts. Then Pull really hard or pry on axle flang till axle and bearing pops out. If you're really in a hurry and don't trust me, pull the cover and check for "C" clips holding the axles in, I don't think they made 7 1/4 with "c" clips though. |

If the bearing is stuck in the housing, just put the wheel back on and give it a whack on the inside with a big hammer. The bearing will pop right out of the housing.

Thanks for the replys. Axels are out now. Got the shop to press off the old bearings/collar. New ones going on this week, new seals, rebuild the brakes then on to the next project. Thanks. |
