Post subject:  clutch linkage?

Howdy,

i recently installed a new clutch in my 85 dodge d-150 (a-833 overdrive transmission). the problem i'm having is i can not get the transmission to shift into gear with the engine running. after adding an extra 1.5 inches onto the clutch adjustment linkage rod. i'm only just able to shift into 3rd and od. before i go and permanently jerry-rig the clutch adjustment linkage rod an additional inch or two. i was wandering if anybody has any idea of why my vehicle needs an additional 2+ inches in length over factor specs for the adjustment rod?

Have you checked the linkage for oblong holes/missing bushings all the way up to the pedal? Stack up those tolerances, and you "shorten" the linkage. Add a new disc, effectively lowering the fingers, and you're out of adjustment.
Also, pressure plate differences can mess things up. For example, going from a B+B to a diaphragm can result in lower finger height, requiring extra adjustment length to match.
Just some ideas...
