Post subject:  Need some help with what engine to put in my 65 Cuda

I bought a 65 Cuda with a non-running 170--don't know why, the person I bought it from just said it was not working. In the deal came a good running 225(in a 65 Valiant), a short block and heads, and a complete 273. I have a stock 273 in my 66 Cuda, and am ok with its performance.

1. What is a ballpark to build a hot /6?

2. Which of the /6 is the "best" to rebuild?

3. What kind of performance can I expect to get out of a /6 as opposed to a 273 or 318? I am not planning on racing this, but I do want to make this be able to beat up on Fords and Chevys :D

I realize this is kind of a broad topic, but I don't know that much about /6 engines as opposed to V8s.

!. ball park $2000 to $3000 for a really good build(if someone does it for you) thin should include everything from manifold heaers and carb on down.
2, I think pre 74 this is a forged crank but if your not racing I dont see alot of diffrence in what motor you pick to build
3, You can build a slant that will be really quick off the line with the right gears but I thing the average might be a little better than a stock 318 to a low end ford 302

If you already have a good SL6 short block then it will not take a lot to rebuild a cylinder head and get that engine put together.
(I have a rebuilt SL6 head I will sell for $380.00, I can ship it anywhere)

Do you know what year the short block is? (How many freeze plugs and what color paint does it have?)

All the other parts you need can be swapped-off the 170
This is a straight forward engine swap and can get the car running ASAP for a little time and $$$
After you get it going you can decide if you want to upgrade Intake / exhaust / ignition etc. to get more power. The good MPG and acceptable performance may be enough, even in stock form.

Post subject:  Headers, year

I forgot to mention, the car also came with a set of headers for the /6--does this make a major difference on a /6?

I do not have the engine yet--picking it up Sunday, and will look at it then. It is coming with a rebuilt head

I imagine the header would be better if only to eliminate the cracked manifold syndrome

Where you located? I would love to get that 273 since my 65 Barracuda is an original 273 4bbl car

Either way, it sounds like you scored well!
