Post subject:	Remote Ignition Cutout
OK all you electrical gizmo wizards out there. I have a convertible that I just freshened the motor in, and being a '69 with absolutely no steering or shifter interlocks, it's almost easier to drive off in without the key than with. My traditional solution has been to open the hood and manually "deactivate" the ignition system everywhere I park. I was going to hide a cut-off switch after the rebuild, but the thought occurred to me that I should be able to get a remote relay to stealthily put in the Pertronix ignition circuit. I'm thinking something very simple in the $10 - $30 range. All I'm finding is big expensive security systems with all kinds of bells and whistles and other bling bling, remote starting and the like (which wouldn't work with a carbureted car anyhow)... Where can I get a simple keychain remote activated relay to run 12V through for cheep? Thanks, D/W

Not quite what you were looking for, but what I have done to my truck and seems very effective for a $1.89.... I installed a momentary push-button switch in-line on the wire from the ignition switch to the starter relay (switch cost me $1.69, and 10 cents each for two connectors ). The button is hidden, yet easily accessable from the drivers seat. If you don't know where it is, the starter doesn't work. All that is required to start is to press and hold the button while cranking. Once started, let go, and you are good until it is shut off again. Something very similar could be done with a hidden toggle switch for the ignition (coil) power wire if the above doesn't float your boat... -S/6 Whoops...nevermind. I missed the whole REMOTE part...

Dennis, something to think about - simple RF based recievers can easily be mistriggerd by various sources, other remotes, radio noise, etc. So I'm not sure a cheap setup would be a good idea for what your thinking about using it for. I remember reading somewhere that theives have tools that fit in the palm of their hands, they can set down on the ground next to a car for a while and it will try emitting all freqencies known to deactivate alarms and eventually will start turning car alarms near by off.

If you saw this car, you would never suspect it worthy of any high-tech RF ignition cutout. I do know one thing, you can't prevent theft, only discourage it. If a thief knew I had such a device, they could simply bypass it. Maybe I'll just go back to the toggle switch idea. The remote concept just seemed more stealthy to me. Wouldn't want a CB to cut off my ignition while driving down the highway, though... D/W
