I have a 1987 Dodge Ram 100, slant 6, 833 trans... While working on the exhaust system, I managed to damage the clutch slave cylinder...got it fixed now...but how to refill the darn thing? (Actually, the whole actuating system is empty now.) I put fluid in the reservoir and pumped the clutch and got some bubbling, but the clutch is still mush... Anyone have any tips or tricks? |

I think you have to bleed it like brakes. There should be a valve. |

Fill up the fluid reseivor and have someone pump the clutch pedal a few times and then hold it to the floorboard. Crack the bleeder and let all the air out. Do it a couple times and make sure to keep topping off your fluid. It may take a while to get it done. If it doesn't work, you may have a line leak somewhere. |

I have the service bulletin that tells how to install the hydraulic clutch kit but no mention how to service or bleed it. All it says is that it comes precharged from the factory. |

OK...tried to fix it, but something did not work out right, so I started calling around the junk yards and auto stores. According to the Hayes Manual, "The clutch hydraulic release system is serviced as an assembly." I went round and round with NAPA and Advance Auto...obviously, their computer database is incomplete, they say it doesn't exsist. They want to sell me master and slave cylinders seperately. Does anyone know what the official part number is to this thing??? |

The kit is (or was) supplied from Chrysler as a complete pre-charged assembly. Maybe aftermarket supplies some components separate? TSB from 1987 says the kit is part number 4443434 for six cylinder with A-833 4-speed transmission. For the A-435 4-speed transmission it is kit 4443435 and screw 0181186. |

Thanks Craig, I appreciate you taking the time to find that information for me. My truck is the one with the four speed and 833. I think I was dealing with counter clerks who did not have a great deal of experience. TSB? Technical Service Bulletin? I grow weary of dealing with incomplete information all the time (Haynes leaves alot to be desired); can you (or anyone reading this) point me in the direction of someone who can provide me with an actual service manual for my specific truck? |

Yes, TSB = Technical Service Bulletin. I have a 1987 truck service manual. Bought it from Chrysler back when I bought the truck in about 1995. There is nothing in the service manual about the hydraulic clutch setup. This was a retrofit to replace the mechanical linkage and "cure" some kind of noise problem or something weird like that. Maybe you can find a dealer that has an "old timer" that knows about this retrofit and knows how to get parts if they are available?? I suppose you can always find the parts to switch back to the mechanical linkage? |

Oy, vey...I have an 84 with the mechanical clutch linkage...I will have to reexamine it...first look was daunting... Don't have the particulars yet, but I was planning on offering my 84 (for parts) as trade for an 87 (for parts). I'll go back and do more research before I take anything else apart; thanks for the advice, Craig. |

Hey Craig... weren't you gonna send me a copy of that bulletin at one time?? Im switching my Volare over to an 833 OD and am interested in a factory type hydraulic clutch setup for it. ALSO; On finding replacement clutch and slave parts look in a Raybestos Brake catalog around the same page as master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and rebuild kits. 1 more thing too, When I had to replace the clutch in my 97 Wrangler I had to buy the clutch and slave all as 1 piece right from the f@#*!ng dealer! Yet when I did my brothers 92 and my 93 I could find those clutch hydraulic parts about anywhere. On the 97 there were no bleeders as there are on the 92-93s. |

Hey Don, Finally found the info and have my scanner hooked up. It's a lot of pages of nothing! Only tells how to bolt on the stuff, nothing more. Not even any pictures or maybe a tiny one or two. I dont' look forward to all the time to scan the pages. wish there was a quicker way. |
