| Post subject: | Torque Convertor question... |
I am putting a "new" tranny in my 76 Duster and I am trying to get a new torque convertor for it. The only local parts store that can get one is Autozone, but their "amazing and wonderful" computer gives me 2 choices on which to get: "with lock-up" "without lock-up" In my infinite ignorance, I don't know what this means. Can anyone help? Which convertor do I get for my 76 Duster with a slant and a basic 904 tranny? Thanks in advance, Billy |

What is your "new" tranny out of? The "lock-up" is referring to the lock-up torque converter. That did not come out until 1978 or so. Look at the input shaft on your transmission. If it has a hole drilled down through the center then it uses a lock-up torque converter. If there is no hole (but it might have a stubby center drill from the manufacturing process, that hole goes nowhere) then you need the non-lockup converter. A 1976 Duster did not have a lock-up converter but it is possible to install a later transmission with the lock-up converter. |

Thanks, Craig!! The replacement trans came from a 79 Aspen, so it takes a lock up convertor. The shaft has the hole, just as you described. Looks like I've got to spend $40 more!! Any news on that grill, Craig? Thanks, Billy |

Billy, sure wish you had mentioned it when you picked up the transmission. If you are back in this area before you need it, you can have the converter. I have no use for it. |
