Hey there I need to know the best choice for a thermo switch for my electric fan. What would you guys say that's a safe and neat temp operation range for 'da beast ???? |

Set it to whatever your thermostat is set to. Your controller should already have a range built into it. So say your thermostat opens at 195, so the fan starts at 195, and goes off at say 180, keeping your temp always between that range. |

I would use a 185 degree t-stat. Then set the fan control to turn on at 210 and off at 190. That way the fan should not come on when there is enough air flow while moving. This is the way "modern" vehicles are set up, but with slightly higher temps. While moving the t-stat is the "boss", when not moving the fan is the "boss". Your gauge will read slightly higher when sitting in traffic. The fan controller should be installed in the head, not in the radiator. |

Thanks charlie I was thinking on going with no tstat and a slightly cooler switch, since I have shaved head and block and that tends to increase head temp... I'm kinda thinking again now that I've read your post. I prepared a T with the fan controller and I was thinking on installing that on the radiator hose. I've had electro fan in this car before, but I was at an expo and a freak started to "sell this setup to me" over and over and I removed it and sold it for a stupid price ($600, I made it up with salvage parts, so when he said yes I ain't hesitated a second) My pervious set up was single fan, T with the controller on the lower radiator hose, extra wiring to make sure that I can turn on or off at my will in case of controller failure. For installing the controller on the head I have to tap the waterneck? My new setup will be 2 fans, and I was thinking on going with the T adaptor on the upper radiator hose (near the head) with a 82°C/76°C controller. I think that the conversion btwn °F and °C is 102°F=40°C so that will get me close to your specifications. I'll add some power relay (70 amp just for having some extra) and wiring to be able to turn it on at my will (just in case, for extra cooling at transit jam or sender failure). Why would you keep the thermostat if you have no blade cooling the water till the fans kicks in? Let me hear your input again! and thanks. |

You want to put the fan controller on the head side of the t-stat, so it can "see" the engine temperature, not the radiator temperature. If you do not use a thermostat, the engine will run too cold while going down the road, and getting air flow thru the radiator, even though the fan is not running. Most of the later slant six heads have multiple tapped holes in the head, near the thermostat area. One is used for the temp gauge sender, others are used for emission sensors, or are plugged. Use one of these other holes for the fan sensor. |

I clipped the sensor for my controller on the top radiator tank, on the side towards the engine. I believe I used a 195deg thermostat. I have my controller set at just below the point the thermostat opens. Isn't the actual head temp lots higher then coolant temp? Thats what I remember reading. If I put the fan controller sensor directly on the head I have a feeling the fan will always stay on after warmup. |

My slant six head is a pre 68 model so no extra holes on the side of the thermostat neck. I'm going with pierre when he sez that head tem is a tad higer than coolant temp, and drilling and tapping the thing for installing the sender is just below where I want to go I'm gonna use my top rad hose and install the T I've lovingly made for this, and then if I'm happy with it I may go into a waterneck modification. about using thermostat, I'm going to skip that (is pre-summer here and we're having a pretty warm climate. Will see in the winter... Previous electrofan setup I made I ain't used thermostat and it worked just fine on the highway or under cruise conditions. My engine happens to like good flow |

I run a 195 degree thermostat and no fan on our valiant. This has shown no problems in the last three years. Highway driving in a cool climate. |

Success!!! upgraded to electro fan. used the T I made, I may modify one waterneck sometime in the future. Runs between 5/8 of tem range (that's when fans kicks in) and cools down to 1/2 in less than 2 min. When I cut the engine, it stays on for about 4 to 6 min and then stops. Not enough for discharging my 80 amp battery and since I have an 80 amp alternator it charges up quick. I'll post pix soon!! thanks to everybody for their tips and advice. Juan |
