| Post subject: | What I found inside SoS today |
Got the Son of Slantzilla motor ready today for the new cam when it arrives. I pulled the head off to just so I could look for "nitrous bites" out of the pistons. I guess my nitrous tune-up is OK, there was no sign of any damage anywhere. Just goes to show that if used properly nitrous is safe. I also checked my roller rockers that I got from the Cox Brothers to see if any of the problems I had with my first set were still there. Everything was fine. My last set beat the crap out of the valve stems and pushrods from lack of oil. I also pulled the oil pump to check the drive gear for wear/damage. It has a nice burnished contact pattern, but no wear. This motor has seen limited street miles, but has been over 6000 repeatedly, so I am very happy with what I've found so far. I am going to pull the pan and try to fit my windage tray next. |

A long list of good news,...I like it! Have fun with that windage tray, will you also install a scraper? (that's what takes all the trial fit time) DD |

Scraper is already in there Doug, and it did take some "finesse". |

I have used 75 and 100 so far. I have 150 jets but Mike starts having seizures every time I tell him I'm going to use them. He really had a cow the other night when I told him I was going to buy his extra plate and run 150 on 1 plate in low and second and add another 100 from the 2nd plate in high. |

OK. Most of the cars around here have 200 shot system. Will a slant six just not take that much? JT |

General consensus is that stock 198 rods won't take it. (I have a long rod motor) |

When you talk about "how big a nitrous shot", you must look at it in terms of HP per cubic inch. You say "most of the guys run a 200 shot". If you are talking about a 350 cubic inch engine, that is .57 HP per cube of nitrous. Applying that same formula to a 225 cubic inch slant would be 128 hp. I have run a 150HP shot on my 170 motor. That would be equililant to a 308 shot on a 350 cube engine. |

Charlie, I love you man! (you know, in a back-slapping car-guy kinda way You take the hype outta nitrous and put it in real quantified terms. You hear "200 shot" and stuff like that all the time, to me it's just like hearing "stall converter" (meaningless), or "three-quarter cam" (equally meaningless). For anyone who doesn't know, Charlie knows his nitrous D/W |

Charlie, I have had that discussion with Mike and other nitrous junkies. That is not really the way it works. A 150 shot is pretty much a 150 shot no matter what it's on. |

...so to use that logic, you would quantify a carburetor jet change as "I went from a 200 hp jet ("shot" of fuel) to a 220 hp jet". I agree with Charlie. These things are like torque converters - they're all baselined on a 350 shivvy on a dyno somewhere. D/W |

Dennis, I think you misunderstood me. You are right a 150 Hp shot on any engine is a 150 HP shot. I meant it as what the engine "see's" as far as the amount of stress on parts. A 225 engine with a 225 HP shot, would be one HP per cube increase in power. A 350 cube engine to see a one HP per cube increase in power would need a 350 HP shot. Either way, that is a pretty large shot. I wouln't want to put more then a 100 hp shot on a 2.2 liter Omni, but a 100 shot on a 440, would not even faze the engine. Do you see what I'm trying to say. |

Yes, so you are making a different and valid point. But my point is still the same. Going by the logic given, if I put nitrous on my 8 horse lawn-mower with the "150 horsepower jets", I will have a 158 horsepower lawnmower! (or more likely, a bunch of Briggs metal fragments) ...or were you refering to the "other" Dennis? D/W |

Look at the bright side Charlie, that 170 has those little tiny short rods in it. You won't have to worry about bending those. |

I'm not really worried, at all. I'm putting together a couple of "freshened up" mild motors, just to see what it will take to break them. One is a 170, the other a 225. People always seem to ask "how much nitrous can I put on a stock motor?" I want to try and answer that. |
