i just buttoned up my engine
during the rebuild I lined the dots crank/cam #1 piston all the way up.
had my brother watch the dist. button as i spun the crank to see if it went to the next firing order as that piston popped up.it did.
pulled dist. contunied rebuild.
Now when I tried to fire her up for the 1st time she pops back thru the carb.
is there a way to tell if i have the cam installed correctly
what can it be.
dist out a tooth??
mmmmhh??

any help much thanks.

Paul

More likely the dist is 180* out. You can pull the dist, rotate 180* and drop it back in, or move all the plug wires 3 positions on the dist cap.

Pull the valve cover off & watch the rocker arms on #1 cyl both should be in the closed position ( up off the valve stem ). This should be with the rotor in the #1 firing position. You will find for some strange reason the mfgrs of cam sprockets like put the marks 180 deg off what you would think is the correct position (ie #6 will be in the up ready to fire position when the dots are aligned) sorry the same thing is true of C--vs and F--ds.

So,,,, if the rocker arms on #1 cyl both should be in the closed position ( up off the valve stem ). This should be with the rotor in the #1 firing position.
then its correct?

*caveat - I havnt tried this on a slant six but * on other engines I've worked on I put a screwdriver into #1 spark plug hole and watch it rise and fall, when it is at the very top and both valves are closed it should be tdc. (of course keep an eye on whatever you put in there to make sure it doesnt catch, score the piston, break or do anything else silly).

With both rockers off the valve stem,(valves closed), the piston at the top of it's stroke, it should be in #1 firing position. STOP.....look at the timing mark on your damper. It SHOULD be lined up with the timing tab, (or close). Slants, being an older engine, sometimes have a problem with the outer ring of the damper slipping, thus throwing off the timing mark, and causing all sorts of havoc with what you think is correct.

If all seems in order, go to your distributor and check the position of the rotor. Typically, it will be pointing at about the two o'clock position, or toward that #1 cylinder. Start placing your plug wires from that cap tower, in proper firing order. Be aware, the #1 and #6 plugs fire at 180* apart, so the timing mark will line up with the tab on both spark points, but the rotor will be pointing at different "towers".

Good luck

Roger

well,,,,,firing out the exhaust, but the battery is so weak now she barely turns, its a timming thing im now thinking its in the dist. and not in the cam/crank.
318's are Soooooo much more simple.
