Post subject:  how do you adjust the vacuum can?
"I did back off the vacuum can to the most responsive setting" <-- i found this in another post and was wondering how do you adjust the can to get a more responsive setting???

another quick one can someone please explain dwell to me i've tried looking it up and it seems like everyone but me knows what it is thanks

I dont know anything about points except how to get rid of them.
to adjust the vacuum pod you need to pull the vacuum hose off of the pod, and put an allen wrench inside. IIRC you turn it clockwise to get an earlier advance(it takes less vacuum to advance the timing). Everyone jump me if I'm wrong.

I asked the same question about a month ago. You will need a 3/32" allen wrench to adjust the can. I had a problem with pinging while driving at 60-70MPH, so backed off the vacuum advance (counter-clockwise adjustment) and problem went away.
I think dwell is the number of degrees the points stay open between the cams on the distributer shaft. I think. :? Its been awhile. (hint hint)

DISTRIBUTOR POINT DWELL
The degrees of distributor dwell are the degreess of rotation through which the breaker contact points remain closed. This is also commonly referred to as "dwell angle" or "cam angle".

My car had the can way too sensitive and it would cause the engine to speed up and slow down. While driving, it caused the carf to jerk back and forth. Using a 3/32 allan wrench and turning counter clockwise fixed the proble.
