get an installer, rent one at Autodrone or something

a nice heavy brass hammer can work too, with the big bolt as an "installer" but I like using a real installer as you don't really want to beat on the thrust sides of the crank bearings

make sure you clean both surfaces up with emery cloth and use some oil on that sucker

Good advice as far as deburring / sanding smooth and oiling the crank nose for balancer installation.
Another helpful thing is to pre-heat the balancer (dampener) a little. Don't get it real hot, the rubber does not like high heat, but take the "chill" off of it.
160-200 degrees is about all you need.

If you ever need to "wack" the damper on with a hammer, take the time to set the engine on it's crank flange end, on a hard surface, doing this will keep the impacts off the thrust bearing surface.

Best way to install these units is to use the installation tool, once you use one there is no "going back" to any other method.

...what's so hard about just pulling it down with the big Fred Flintstone bolt? That's the method I've always used... I haven't seen a /6 with one, so I just cut down one from a small-block. Am I missing something here? I would never, ever want to beat the thing on.

THAT IS WHAT I DID. USED A BOLT AND LARGE WASHERS TO PULL IT ON. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE PUT IT TOO FAR FORWARD. GUESS I CAN USE THE PULLER AND BACK IT OFF UNTIL THE PULLEYS LINE UP.

Balancer hub needs to seat against the oil slinger/crank timing gear, so you could not have installed it too far.
