Post subject:  Horrible bad stuff.
The 1945 was beginning to need some attn. Me , being cheap, decided to just try one of my other carbs.(1945). This one needed the float raised a bit. Not wanting to pull it off the car,I just took the top off. No big deal, right. Something went wrong, a dead cylinder has developed.Sounds like something fell in and hit a valve. So, I need to know,is there anything that could fall into the intake when removing the top of a 1945. I never saw anything in the intake and I never dropped any clips. Anyway, I went back to the old carb as the second need a rebuild worse than the first.

Usually there nothing that falls out when you take the top off.

The problem is when you put the top back on..... :shock: As the accelerator pump plunger goes down into its hole, the little check ball and brass wieght get squirted out and fall down inside the carb; or intake manifold if the throttle blade is open.

The factory service manual says to siphon the fuel out of the carb before putting the top back on. This way the accelerator pump squirts air instead of liquid and is not as likey to push the check ball and weight out of the hole.

That check ball and brass wieght are tiny things. They may or may not do damage. Might want to do some other investigating first? Good luck.
