Is there another coolant type beside R134 I can retrofit my 70 Valiant with?

There are many, but why would you want to?

Yeah, what Charrlie said. Why do you want to retrofit anything? R12 is the most efficient refrigerant and is still available and legal in the US.

Don't forget to mention R12 is also among the most expensive!

Sure, it's relatively expensive. But compared to the extra spending that has to be done to make a retrofitted system work well, the cost isn't out of line. Add that to the fact that it's a long-term purchase (not like you need new refrigerant every week, month, year, etc.), and "Eek! R12 is more expensive!" doesn't really work as an argument against it.

Even in Canada, where R-12 cannot be used, R-134a is the best replacement to use. Main thing to remember: I do not know of any compressor manufacturer, or rebuilder, that will warentee their product, if any refrigerant other then R-12 or R134a is used.

As a side note. The auto A/C industry is looking at another new refrigerant as of 2008. One of the refrigerants being considered is co2, carbon dioxide.
