Would it be safe to clean the fan clutch assembly with carb cleaner or other solvents? The spring in the center is gunked up and would like to clean it up.

That "gunk" in the spring is the silicone fluid leaking out of the seal behind the spring. When enough of that fluid leaks out, the clutch will no longer engage or not engage enough to keep you cool.

That spring thing is actually a bimetal part that winds up and unwinds with temperature change. It controls a blade valve inside to regulate the fluid flow inside the fan clutch that engages or disengages or regulates the fan speed.

Hmmmmmm.... I gave you more information than you asked for and still did not answer your question .

I use "super clean" or other alkaline type detergent and a hose.
