well, the time has come for me to rebuild my engine. i want to mill the head to bump the compression a bit. i want to keep compression around 9:1 and be able to run 87 octane. i know i cant tell for sure without measuring it out but as a general rule of thumb, what amount should i take off to get about 9:1 compression?

Most cam grinders can tell you what static compression ratio to target with a selected profile. One key factor will be the lobe seperation / overlap.

In general, a 260 duration cam with around .460 lift, ground on a 110 LSA will do well on pump gas with 9 to 9.5 static compression. The advance curve you run will have a big impact on the fuel quality you will need.

There is no good way to know how much to mill off the block and head to get that compression ratio, you have to measure and do the math.
