Have an orange box sitting around but it has only four pins, all the other ecu's i have are five pin. The missing pin wire runs to the top right of the ballast resistor. Can it work or should i leave it sitting for a time i might have a car it can work on?

The 4-pin ECUs replaced the 5-pin items in production around 1978 or so. The 5-pin modules use a dual ballast resistor with 4 terminals, while the 4-pin unit uses a single ballast resistor (2 terminals). Both 4- and 5-pin ECUs can be had from reputable makers like Standard-Bluestreak and Echlin. Careful, the Mopar boxes (black, orange, chrome, gold...) have been of inconsistent and poor quality the last six or seven years. I have one on my '62, but it's coming off for HEI as soon as I get a spare 45 minutes. If I get a spare 15 minutes instead, the orange box is coming off and a better-quality Standard-Bluestreak unit is taking its place.

Yes, the 4 pin box can swap right into the old 5 pin harness without
any mods.
The old 5th wire is not used (often green color wire, blank spot on the newer EI box)
that runs to the 4 post ballast, the 4 pin EI box does not
need it.

It, however, does not work the other way....... if you
hook a 5 pin EI box into the 2 post ballast 'later system'
it will not work.....

Thanks Dan, i have heard of the problems with the mopar box's of late. I was running the echlin TP 50 but it went bad and had to go back to the stock box. I am only hoping to make a few passes down the track with orange box so we'll see how it goes, hope it last's longer than a few!!
