Post subject:  Points or Electronic Distributor ????
I bought a used 70's slant 225 to replace my 67 225 in my truck. The new engine came with an electronic distributor ( NO POINTS INSIDE ). It has a two wire lead coming out of it. Does this lead connect to the old coil or do I need something else? Would it be better to just put the older points distributor in the new motor ? If electronic is better how is it wired in and what other parts and wires will I need ? Any help is appreciated and thank you for past help.

You only have one part of the electronic ignition system: the distributer. The lead you talk about (with one male and one female plug) plugs into the electronic control unit wire harness. If you go to the articals section on this web site home page, there should be a wiring diagram to show you how to to it...you will need an eletronic voltage regulator though (which is no problem, since most replacements made for your year car are electronic anyway).
Yes, you can use the points distributer on a newer engine. I did when I put a '73 engine into my '72 Satellite. The existing wire harness is there, and will hook up just like the old engine. I do recommend a swap to electronic ignition though, its a pain to change points in a slant, and the system is very reliable (just keep a spare ballast resister in the glove box, about the only thing to fail). When you get the parts, let use know and we will help you along. 8)

Changing to electronic ignition is very easy. You can still get a stock wiring harness right from your local Dodge dealer for about $20. You can also get an electronic ignition module from Auto Zone for about $17. Properly adjusted points work well but they require frequent attention. An electronic setup would be much better.

This information often proves useful for people converting from points to electronic ignition. You could install the points distributor, just to get things going, and convert to electronic once you've collected the remaining parts and the knowledge to install them.

Or you could sell the electronic distributor on ebay for $10,000 :wink:

you could re-use the point distributor if the shaft doesnt have any side play and that the vacuum and centrifigal advances are working properly.

you can also remove the points and condensor and replace them with a Pertronix Ignitor electronic conversion kit (part #1361A). the good thing with the Ignitor is that there are only two wires to hook up and no splicing and brain boxes to deal with. you can keep the point/condensor assembly in the glove box to put back on the distributor, should the Ignitor module fail for some reason.

Definitely go for an electronic set up, but dont trash the point distributor if its in good shape.
I've had my share of ECU and pickup coil failures on the road and it was the good old points dizzy that was kept in the trunk that got me and the car home 8)
