have an 85 engine in a 73 swinger with 23,000 miles on a rebuild. ran fine for a long time . recently developed a miss then a backfire every now and then.lost power lots of backfires through carb.
replaced dist,cap,wires.br. module.
went to back out of driveway and almost total loss of power then died. hasn't started since. cranks over backfires twice through carb and dies. coil ohms ok. have an orange spark at plugs and coil wire.
have 6.5 volts at coil key on. 9.8 cranking at coil. 11.6 at all poles on br except 1 has 6.5.
sure would like for this thing to run.

Sounds like the ignition timing is way off. Do you have a timing light or access to a friend that has one? If you do, check what your initial timing is set to (with the vac advance line disconnected and the port on the carb blocked off/plugged)

Another possibility is your timing chain jumped. But as the engine is a rebuild, I doubt the timing set has the nylon gear teeth that are notorious for jumping.

Check the simple things (IE timing) first.

Also check to be sure that the distributor drive gear did not break.

the gear was broken but i replaced the distributor and it still does the same thing. pulled the timimg chain cover according to the book with the dots aligned the keyway should be straight up. mine is about 2 teeth off but the dots are aligned and chain has minimal stretch. if the dots are aligned, which cylinder is in fire position ?? is it #6? if it is when i stab the dist the rotor should be on #6 tower. right. :?
it has spark at the plugs tho it is orange it is somewhat fat.
i'm pulling my hair out over this one.
thinking about just bypassing the old wiring and just wiring in an internal resistor coil and toggle switch and push button start
