I've got a 1-bbl BBD carb on my 65 Valiant 225. Earlier, I replaced the carb I had, but due to linkage problems with the replacement, and upon the advise of this board, I left the original carb base plate on the engine when I put the new one on. Trouble is, I think the base plate is where my problems are. Screw in the adjustment at the base and nothing changes (idle, etc). I'm going to pull the entire carb off and see if can locate what is happening. My linkage is the old rod type...no cable. After disconnecting the vacuum line, PCV line, and fuel line, how do you get the throttle linkage out of the plastic sleeve on the base of the carb? Do you just slide the carb towards the passenger side of the car? I don't see any retaining clip..

My intent then is to soak the entire base plate in carb cleaner. Is it adviseable to unscrew the adjustment screw in the base to make sure the gunk gets to the inside also? With no manuals, etc. this is hell.

...you musta meant "BBS". By all means, take things apart and clean 'em up real good. The problem may not be in the throttle body (base) though... could be a plugged up air bleed, or any # of things. Buy a kit (about $15) and soak and refresh the whole thing. It'll come with some basic instructions and most importantly, an exploded view!

EDIT: I reread your post (more carefully this time) and noted that you previously replaced all except the throttle. Was this a reman unit, or what? If it's fresh, desregard the part about disassembly and concentrate on the throttle body as you are doing.

My fingers didn't go in the direction I was thinking. Of coure BBS...The carb is new with the exception of the base and as I indicated, turning the adjustment screw has no effect on engine performance.

Yes, the carb is fresh. When I installed it, I removed the four screws holding the body of the carb to the original base, did the same on the new one, and mounted it on the base still on the engine.

Question: After I unbolt the carb from the manifold, how do you get the throttle linkage out of the plastic tube, just pull it through after cracking the throttle a little?

What does this mean? Does this mean you used the old base plate with the new throttle body? Why?

Uhhh, you don't remove the cable from the plastic tube. Why would you want too. The cable end is fastened to the throttle lever on the carb with a clip. Remove the clip.

Throttle body = "base plate", same difference. For why, see DAJUJ's quote, above.

Darn this has gotten complicated...there is no throttle cable on the car...the throttle is open and closed by a rod that has a 90 deg bend in it and it passes through the throttle linkage on the carb base, and in doing so, goes through a white plastic sleeve of some sort. I was inquiring as to the best method of removing this rod from the carb. I think it is done by moving the carb towards the passenger side of the car once the carb is free of fuel line, vacuum tube, etc. I don't see any "C" clamp holding the rod in place, so maybe it will be simple to remove the carb one it is unbolted. If it is warm enough tomorrow morning I am going to take the dmmmmm carb off.

The rod just slides out of the plastic sleeve, you need to pull on it hard, but it comes out.

As for the base swap, you need to be careful when doing this because there are a number of different passageways and corrasponding gaskets that need to line-up. I always double check the old gasket with the new and match it with the mating parts to make sure none of the passageways get blocked off.

Thanks to all of you! The carb is off and soaking in cleaner. I finally broke down and ordered a manual for the car (CD version). I already have one for other cars, but none covered the BBS.
