Finally got the carb off the /6 yesterday in hopes of finding out why air/fuel mixture screw had no effect on the engine. Thoroughly cleaned the entire carb am about ready to put it back on. Finding nothing wrong with the carb, I'm centering my attention on the carb to intake manifold gasket. The current gasket appears much thicker than those I have seen in the past (30 years ago). It is black in color and appears to be made of some sort of composite material. If one of you has access to a digital camera and has an old or new gasket laying around your garage, would you forward me a photo at regsec@exis.net? While thoroughly bored at work yesterday, I did a google then parts search at NAPA and came up with a gasket they sell for later year cars which sure didn't look like the gasket I have on hand. Thanks for your help.

Lo and behold after posing my question regarding gaskets, I made a call to another /6 friend and he had one...the correct one. Just two more questions and I will quit beating this dead horse up...have you found it necessary to readjust the float level on rebuilt carbs? Any other adjustments they don't make quite correct?

Both the thick and the thin carb-to-manifold gaskets are "correct". The thick ones can be useful in solving heat-related running problems and they don't create any new running problems of their own; you just have to make sure you don't create physical/space problems (linkage hookup/adjustment, air cleaner hits the hood, etc.)

Yes, rebuilt or "remanufactured" carbs very often need the float readjusted.

Thanks for the information. Examined the float level and had to tweak it a bit to get to specs. Put the carb back on the engine and boy...what a difference a little carb cleaner, proper gasket, etc. did for it. If you had read my earlier posts, all this started because of a low vacuum reading...five! Car started easily..no pumping the gas pedal. Warmed it up and took another vacuum reading and this time it was 12. The idle mixture screw now makes a difference in how the engine runs too. It didn't before. The previous gasket and base plate of the carb were screwed up. Life is good and the valiant is on the road again. Thanks to the many members and their input.
