Well since my other forum got burned out im starting a new one. Crank over the slant and it sounds like its only firing on one cylinder. After much cranking it sounds like it start to hit on more cylinders. But it wont start. I checked the points and plugs, both in operating condition. i know its getting gas because one of my fouled plugs was wet.If the wetness on the plug was oil, that would mean my rings are bad right? How could i tell the diff between fuel and oil? Also if i sit in the engine compartment and push on the fan i can turn over the motor fairly easy, and i can hear what sounds like air escaping. Is this just the air flowing through the valves or should i be more concerned? Any trouble shooters to get this wreched slant fired up would be awesome. Thanks

Did you remove the distributer and not get it indexed correctly, or disturb the engine with the distributer out? Sometimes if your a couple of teeth off it will not start: Either be way retarded, or to advanced. Here is what I'd try. Get the number 1 cylinder to TDC. Install the distributer so that the roter is pointing right on the number one spark plug tower on the distributer cap. Should fire up for you then.

I think it sounds like ignition timing too...

its at TDC when the exhaust valve just finishes closing right? Or is it the intake? or does it even matter? But i didnt have the distributor out so the timing wouldnt be moved at all. Plus i had it started yesterday but i only had it run for a minute or two then i couldnt get it started again. So if the timing was that advanced or retarded it wouldnt of ran at all correct?

Well i got the piece of $#!T to start, now there water leaking out of the head...GRRRR is this catastrophe ever gonna end? So it looks like it may have been the head gasket the whole time.

Just had an epihpany...i checked the torques on the head and put them at 65 then 70. She fired right up but shes getting way too hot. I think i may have the thermostat in backwards....IDIOT!

Theres still water leaking out of the head, and its cranking over real hard like theres no oil in it. But theres plenty, i think this slant has major issues beyond my expertese. I might have to settle for buying a pig block that already runs... :(

If you do, at least you have a chanse to do a good build on this one.
I guess the gasket could be damaged from trying to run without good clamping?

I guess...im gonna go out and see if i have any dead cylinders. I know for sure im gonna have to replace the head gasket though. WHAT A PAIN! Im gonna see if i can bum an old 440 race motor off of my uncle, that would be sweet!

Well im pretty sure one cylinder is hosed. I can kick over the motor by pushing on the fan with my foot, its not as easy as it should be either. Im not sure what cylinder it is but it gets hung up on one cylinder. When i had the head off and in the shop, #6 collected some rust but im sure i got it all out. I just dont know anymore....Ding Dong The Slant Is Dead!
