I've heard that the 74' sl6 cam is a step up than the older cams. I have a few questions. 1:Is it a step up from a 69' cam? 2:tools needed to remove the cam. 3:Is the 74 a solid cam or hydraulic and if so can you just swap cams and be done?(i have solid) Since there are a bunch of Rams, Valiants, Sportsmans, and And volares around the wreking yards and a camshaft is something you can fit in your pants ......minus the 2$ addmitance fee. Oh yeah, is it ONLY the 74' cam, or are there other factory mopar equals.

Heck yes it is!! Just don't make the same mistake I did and toss it over the 15ft wall hoping it lands in the grass. I didn't know a cam would break in two that easily. Get some thin rope and strap it to your leg and wear loose pants, they'll never know. I rip those places off all the time.

The 74 cam IS hydraulic...but i of course have no idea what tools you need or what you need to do to use it in your block.

74 is not hydraulic, it just has a lot of oil on it.

Are you suggesting that in the past 30 years someone has swapped my motor with out me knowing? My truck is a 74 and the cam is hydrualic...i dont see why it would be any different for a car...

Hydraulic cams for the Slant did not exist in 74, AFAIK. Either someone swapped your motor or your valvetrain, or it's not hydro...

The hydro cam came in 81 or so...

You need a puller for the pulley, 1/2" for the timing cover and rocker cover,
9/16" for the rocker assembly(maybe 1/2?) 9/16 or 5/8 for the bolt on the cam gear.

Cool. Thanks now I know what tools to bring, I'll bring a grab bag along just incase. It is a wrecking yard and engine hoists are availible so I can lift the engine or I can remove all the grill ect. removing the peices fender to fender sounds easier though. Has anyone else ever done that 74' cam swap? Is valve clearance an issue with the higher lift? I have a shaved head .040. 225 block mechanical cam. Can I just swap the cam and be done or are there other valve train components that also must be swapped. Thanks

The lifters should be changed out, also. Either new lifters, or the old lifters from the cam you are going to use. Keep the lifters on the same lobes, that they were on in the old engine. Have you checked on the price of a new stock replacement cam? It is a fair amount of work to get a cam and lifters from a used engine, and you have no idea of the condition of the lobes.
