Hey Guys: I NEED HELP

I have a 1979 Duster and am planning on installing a set of Clifford headers, but am going to keep the stock intake and carb for now.
What does everybody do with the square flange that will be left open when the exhaust manifold is removed ??? What about the choke does it become useless ??? It is needed since the car is a daily driver and I live in Canada.
How about the throttle linkage - where do you mount it after the manifold has been taken off ???

I am planning on installing true dual exhaust with Dyno Max muffler exiting on both side of the car before the wheels.

Hence the header dilema. Your screwed. No provision for an automatic choke so you will have to go manual choke. Not all that bad an idea. The intake rectangular flange goes open unless someone has a spiffy solution. I suppose something could be fabricated to take heat up to it.

Good luck.

There are a couple of options. I believe that is was on this forum that I saw a picture of a water heated plate attached to the bottom of the intake manifold, which blocked the hole and heated the manifold. The other option is to install the Clifford intake manifold that incorporates a water passage for manifold heat. Of course, that would require a different carburetor, but you could then install one that has an integral electric choke.

Frank raso has the water heat-plate.
Search for raso enterprises or something like that, or make one yourself

You will need to heat your intake in Canada. I ran a basic "super six" (BBD) setup for years on my Duster with stock cam and everything plus Clifford headers. On cold, damp days the carb would ice up inside until it got real warmed up. Will hardly idle at all when this happens. I partially solved the problem (helped, but not cured) by modifying the stock sheet metal heat stove to fit over the front three header pipes, then ran this up to the thermostatically controlled air cleaner. This way the carb at least sucks some warmer air when things are cold. I still employ this setup today on the S/D Six Duster. You are going to need more than that in Canada. The hot water plate sounds like a great idea for you.

I think it would be a good idea to get the bottom of the intake blasted or something, so heat is transferred easyer.

You could make a bracket that bolts on the intake manifold, it would just have to hang low enough to compensate for the travel of the linkage lost. making the bracket wouldnt be too difficult, just a peice of sheet metal, thick enough to support the stress from the linkage. Cut it into an upside down L shape bolting the shorter part onto the manifold, then bending the longer part down probably 45* or so then bolting the linkage hardware from the old bracket onto the bottom of the new bracket. BAM...throttle linkage in action!
