What is the shortest bellhousing trans combination I can use behind a 225 six. I'm having trouble getting enough room for a driveshaft, 2' is not enough. The three speed manual box I have is 34 inches from bellhousing to engine flange to end of tail shaft. I need a answer quick!! Standard or automatic is OK.
Thanks

Hi
That should be 2" is not enough, 2' would be fine.

The shortest combination is a /6 bellhousing with a A or F body transmission.

Slant six engine, slant six 727 trans with a shorty tailshaft kit. The tailshaft was less then 6 inches long. You will have to be very carefull about driveshaft lenght. The depth of engagement is much more critical then with a standard tailshaft. Some trucks had short tail transmissions, But Fairbanks racing trans (no longer in speed business) and B&M use to have an racing unit, which was shorter yet. You could try Pat Blais Transmissions. tflitepatty@verizon.net They might know if it is still available.
Just went out to the shop and measured a shorty trans. The total lenght of the trans from engine mounting surface to back of tail housing is 21 inches.

HI,

Thanks for the reply. The short (21") transmission you mentioned, is that a 727? Does that have the after market tail housing you mentioned? The 3spd box I have is short only about 8 ' but the tail stock is extra long over all length 34 "
\6T Thanks

Yes, the shorty trans, is a 727 with a aftermarket tailshaft kit. I don't know if the shorty kit is still available or not. The were popular in the 60's and 70's.
