I've got a couple questions about Ignition timing on slant 6 engines.
First i've got a 68 Dart 225-auto. Bought it a few months ago, seems to run OK,, but its very sluggish. I mean its a real dog.
I've been checking some basic things, rebuilt the 1920 carb to get the accelerator pump working better.
Checked the ignition timing, my Motors Manual says it should be at 0 degrees
I've always set my cars a few degrees advanced over what the book says, since i'm at 5500 ft elevation.
The car is currently set a 2 degrees advanced.
I've read posts here that say slants like to run best around 7 or 8 degrees.
The other problem is that even at 2 degrees before,,,i'm at the end of the adjustment ! I can turn the distibutor any farther.
I'm thinking when the previous owner install the mopar electronic distributor maybe he got the distributor drive in one tooth off or something.
Would it make sence to pull the dist, and rotate the shaft one tooth counter clockwise ? Then maybe I would be able to advance it more without running into the end of the adjustment slot ?
Is the 2 degree setting part of whats making the car so sluggish ?
This car wont even spin one tire in the dirt ! Please help !

I usually set the timing at 10-12 degrees at idle.
But I also weld up the advance slots, so I dont get more than 27 or so degrees at high rpm.
You can move the dist. 1-2 teeth, and get the adjustment you need.
