I have a large tranny filter that mounts to the side of my 225 slant 6. It is a line filter of some sort. It is about the size of a pop can. I would like to replace it. Where can I find one. 1962 Lancer GT |

Go fish. That external filter was introduced as an accessory in late '61, made standard equipment in '62, continued for '63 and replaced by the now-familiar in-pan filter for '64. The last source was Fram (P1651PL) but it's been discontinued and no stock remains anywhere. Unless you need the filter for the original appearance, it's much less hassle in the short and long run to simply remove the external filter and replace it with a section of appropriately-formed/appropriately-specced hard or soft line, then replace the in-pan screen with the '64-'65 2-hole in-pan filter. |

That'd be a neat trick since they're no longer made—maybe your guy has access to old stock off a warehouse shelf? I need some of these for another application; will you let us know what actually happens if he winds up ordering one?(For actual Mopar use, the '64-'65 in-pan filter is still the best way to go) |

These universal spin-on trans filter kits don't directly replace the '60-'63 inline trans filter.Also, important, I've just learnt that you need to use a '64-up pan if you use the '64-'65 filter. |

Has anyone tried crossing that number over to an industrial application? What other applications did that filter fit? I would bet there was some other obscure use for that filter on a forklift, tractor, etc. that LPM or Luberfiner picked up. Ive come across all kinds of old style filters that are still being produced for relics. |

It was an industrial filter that just happened to be used on Mopars. That's the problem; it's been disco'd at the source.

ok, now Im a lot more convinced someone, somewhere, is still making them. Not Fram, which is probably a good thing, but if you can come up with a specific application I bet you it'll be listed in the LPM or SMH catalog. I can still get bypass filters for the 4 cyl Chrysler flathead. I got a trans filter from them for a first generation Towmotor I helped restore for a showroom years ago, that thing was one of 200 built... betcha I can find it...  it might be in Belgium but it's better than nothing.

Do you know when roughly it was discontinued? I can try to cross the Fram number over. I might need to use an old catalog. |

It was disco'd in the last few years; if you have a 5- or 6-year old catalogue it ought to be in there. I will be very pleasantly surprised if you find a cross for it; there were no crosses to other filter makers when I checked about 12 years ago. |
