Have a 62 Lancer GT. 225 salnt six Ballast resistor appears to be on firewall. Instructions say to connect red wire to ignition side of ballast resistor. Red wire supplied with unit is only 12 inches long. I need about 4 feet to get to the firewall. Do I need to splice into it and make it longer? If so why dont they come with a longer line. Its easier to cutt wire than to add to it...

I guess they're assuming you'll mount the module near the ballast resistor (or the ballast resistor near the module).

Yet another reason to use HEI instead of Pertronix... :-)

Isn't the ignition side of the ballast resistor just the + coil wire? If I understand those directions correctly that should be right. Don't need a very long wire for that. Use an ohmeter to check for zero (< 1 Ohm) between coil + wire and ballast plug (unplug both ends).

Dart 270.... That is kinda what I was wondering. Seems odd to have to go to the firewall and tap into the ballast resistor . I would think the + coil side too but I was not sure...Anyone else have an idea?

Sorry, you will have to splice the red wire-- did my 62 valiant the same way, the black wire goes to the coil & the red wire goes to ballast. Get some heat shrink & splice in the wire --also I got a splitter from radio shack so I would have two male terminals at the resistor. The unit works great-- anyhow on my car it smoothed out the idle & seemed to start a little better. 8)

red wire goes to ballast on factory equiped cars- if your are using the pertronix II maybe you can bypass it, the instructions do not recommend by-passing the ballast resistor, been running on my car for 2 years that way.

I would think you can connect to the coil.
Or does it matter if it is a factory, or aftermarket wire?

VDART...How do you know what side of the ballast resistor to hook it to? There are 2 terminals and they are not marked at all. It is mounted vertically on the firewall. Top or bottom terminal????

Yea, The directions say to install it one way. I called them directly and asked the question. They said that you can hook it to the + and - side of the coil with no problems. Been running 2 of them that way for over 5 years now on a /6 and a 383 with no problems. Go for it!!

Dont know how more clear we can be on this.

Red to + side of coil
Black to - side of coil

Just like 69 a100 I have been running the same pertronix on my car for close to 3yrs (hooked up this way)and have naver had to touch it since.

Keep in mind once you do hook it up that the gap has to be spot on or it will not run. They give you a plastic feeler gauge for this.

I will do it the simple way. Directly to the correct coil terminals. I will hopefully try to start it this week for the first time. Wish me luck

Leave the ballast in if you are running stock coil, or bypass the ballast if you are running aftermarket internal resistance coil.
