Speaking of dumb questions, I have to pick up a slant six from a friend's garage and have no idea if he has any chain or bolts attached to the engine. What size bolts do you use and where do you normally attach them when lifting an engine?

there are two heavily-gussetted holes on the top of the cylinder head, between the valve cover and the manifold surface. Use those.

(Not a dumb question, btw)

1.5" might be a bit long--I had some sticking out on that size.

Just in case, check the front bolt. My 62 had a smaller thread diameter on that front one so I had to use chain on the intake/exhuast manifold to lift it.

Carefull when using the front hole near the water outlet.........too long of a bolt and you will find yourself tapped into the water jacket playing "Little Dutch boy"

hmm i'll have to check on that one. This hole was located near the middle of the block. I'll take a pic when im there later this week.

My other 62 engine had two of the same size holes...go figure.

And heck..i'm Dutch so my finger should work indefinitely =)

Yes, the "front" hole on my 74 225 is actually towards the middle of the block. Both of my bolts had parts attached with them. 9/16 was the head size of both of the bolts on mine.
